Over the course of the past twenty-four hours, I was greatly inspired to create this respective thread; and unlike my other population thread, which is currently slacking due to the lack of active births and transfers (if you’re aware of my sengi thread, you’ll know what I’m talking about). Hopefully, on the opposite end of things, the future of Babirusas in the states continues to be bright:

I just realized that I somehow mixed up (0.1) Kirana and (0.1) Nutmeg’s location (accidentally). Because of this, the former is actually located at the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens, and the latter is still with her mother at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

I appreciate the information regarding Toronto’s babirusas, but as this thread will focus exclusively on the American population; they will only be given a passing mention here.

As it turns out, ZooTampa apparently have another babirusa named (0.1) Wesi, who, somehow, slid under my radar when it came to my initial research; and in response to this addition, there should now be the (current) following numbers of babirusa in the United States…

Additionally, it should be noted that based on a relatively-recent study, every babirusa in the United States does not belong to a single species. Rather, they are actually hybrids (if the study proves true) between the more familiar North Sulawesi Babirusa / Babyrousa celebensis and the somewhat obscure Togian Babirusa / Babyrousa togeanensis. Whether this hybridization will be detrimental to the population in the future or not remains to be seen, but just to be safe, it would be wise to label the American individuals as simply Babirusa (B. celebensis x togeanensis) from now on.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Update:

Like the previous update, there isn’t a lot to address with this update either. However, I may have figured out the years when (1.0) Mentari and (0.1) Betty were born respectively; as well as continuing the confirmation of (0.1) Nutmeg’s presence at the park. I am always open to any suggestions if I messed up on the years, but as of right now, this should hopefully be correct:
  • 1.0 Mentari (circa 2017 - unknown parental information)
  • 0.1 Betty (circa 2009 - unknown parental information)
  • 0.1 Nutmeg (November 21st, 2021 - Mentari x Betty)

Unless given access to this recent study ... this cannot be independly verified.... Togian Babirusa are quite a different species in the first place of babirusa and these islands do have an Oceanic sea separation from mainland north-western Sulawesi (Gorontalo to Minahassa)!

Posting this study would be interesting, as I don't believe there's been any other confirmation of this.

It’s been talked about here elsewhere, but it seemed to have kicked off when @MOG2012 mentioned it in one of their spec zoo threads.

This requires confirmation, but it seems that the babirusas in captivity are hybridized. A genetic study showed DNA from Babyrousa celebensis x Babyrousa togeanensis. Unfortunately, no paper has been published on this discovery. There was a presentation online from the lector Peter Galbusera (?) from Antwerp/Planckendael a few years back. All animals within the EEP programme, Singapore and Surabaya were tested. American animals came from the same source and should therefore also be considered unpure.
Still hoping that proper documentation will come out to verify the above information. For now, I have listed my own babirusas in my database as Babyrousa sp.

AZA documents published in December.

Re the hybridization, given there is apparently no paper or otherwise published study to provide actual confirmation, I would say it is invalid until actual published data arrives on the scene. DNA analysis has been wrong before, to boot.
