Shepreth Wildlife Park Shepreth Wildlife Park News

I had a nice trip to Shepreth today for the first time since April 2023.

My highlights were definitely seeing the Clouded Leopards in the afternoon and also watching the 2 Porcupines playing with pumpkin enrichment.

It is sad that they no longer hold Black Tailed Marmosets but the White Nosed Coati is an amazing addition.

The Azara's Agouti (which were in with the Black Tailed Marmosets) are now in the exhibit attached to the tropical house. This exhibit previously housed Brazilian Guinea Pig (which I didn't see or were signposted anywhere, I don't know if Shepreth still has them).

But overall a nice return trip.

In a portion of the clouded leopard enclosure, both still a very good size and a least he is now in a facility that will provide the appropriate care he always deserved
The smaller section which previously held lynx, next to the otters?

Sad news, Ratna 21 year old Sumatran tiger was euthanised on Tuesday. The park could no longer manage her health and mobility problems

That's such sad news. Saw it on the BBC too

Sumatran tiger dies at Cambridgeshire wildlife park

A great age to reach at 21 and a credit to the staff who must be missing her very much. I've much enjoyed seeing her and Kelabu her daughter (I believe they were originally at Chessington). Ratna has been the wallpaper on my main PC for a couple of years after a really enjoyable sunny day out.

These tigers (mother and daughter pair) were originally at Chessington, they retired to Shepreth when Chessington moved into Amur tigers with Tiger Rock/Land of the Tiger. Shepreth had room for the pair since their previous zoo-mix tigers Rana and Amba were PTS in 2017 and 2018

Daughter Kelabu is still at Shepreth

Nought to do with Tiger Rock development at Chessington more a good decision that suited the needs of the tigers and Shepreth

Went to Shepreth in the afternoon today after an early morning at nearby RSPB Fowlmere. Quite busy which was understandable given the weather was lovely.

The main Genet enclosure was signed as empty and I didn't see them signed on the other side across the raised walkway. From a FB video on 4th April I thought they were perhaps down to one only, but they might have been offshow or I missed them.

The nearby Scottish Wildcats are now in one enclosure with the youngsters having moved on as expected.

There was a notice in the empty Iguana enclosure about the move to Colchester (as noted in the thread already) but that the enclosure won't be welcoming a new animal as it will be combined with the one next door to provide more room for the Armadillos.

Was interesting to see the Pygmy Marmosets in their new location near the other small primate island, they were all up at the window and a good looking group. The Golden Lion Tamarins were active outside which was fun to see.

I couldn't remember seeing White Crested Turaco there before but along with their Violet and Red Crested companions a pair of those made for some nice viewing in the shared tortoise house.

Kelabu the remaining Sumatran tiger was wandering around which was fun and there was signage about Ratna on the enclosure.

The wallaby walkthrough was closed with a sign saying veterinary care - there were building materials inside the enclosure and the double door gateway was partly removed, so not sure where the wallabies or the Prairie dogs who shared with them were. The other group of Prairie dogs in the mound in the donkey field were out and about.

First visit here since March 2015, was really nice to see the place again, but on the whole not much has changed.

The bat tunnel is still one of the best I've seen, a long flight for the bats that is just an enclosed embankment, but it works really well. At one point a bat climbed through a gap in the plastic dividers, which a few of us visitors got back into the main flight. It didn't seem distressed and knew where it was going, so it must have done it before. The bats all got very familiar as the day went on and were very interested in the visitors, especially if you were standing still, had to take to waving my arms to avoid being landed on

Was good to see Kelabu the Sumatran Tiger, who I've seen previously when she was at Chessington, sorry to have missed her mother Ratna though

The lynx was showy and very interested in the goings on in the nearby enclosures, especially the ASCOs which were very noisy all day

Great to see Striated Caracara, feel like caracara aren't around too many places

The three species of turaco were a great sight in the shared Tortoise house, don't think I've seen White Crested before.

Saw nearly every species at the park, but the Clouded Leopard and Maned Wolf were no more than ears visible, stayed as late as possible but still no luck.

The only complete no-shows were the Slow Loris, but did catch a quick view on the CCTV in the lobby of the nocturnal house
