Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Cleveland Metroparks Zoo News 2025

Does that mean the Gharial’s are staying? And if not are there any animals that are able to stay until renovations are completed?
Personally, and this is just my perceptions (and not based on information coming from the zoo management nor staff, so open to conjecture...)!!!: These Indian gharials are just about to approach adulthood (hatched 2007) and any move for these crocodians would be quite stressful. It be much better if they remain at the zoo and I do assume the there are good locations within the zoo back of house to hold both females in temporary accomodition for some considerable timeframe.

Perhaps some of our esteemed Cleveland locals (@CMZman et al) have more definite and substantive information on these issues than I can (as a herp / crocodile afficionado specialist....).

I have no idea, to be honest with you.

Went to Cleveland today to enjoy the nice weather before it goes back to subzero for the next week or so.

Main Zoo
  • Australian Adventure is now blocked off on both sides. On my last visit the entrance by the amphitheater was still open. Now the entire path around Elephant Crossing and the amiptheater is closed.
  • Spoke to a keeper and they confirmed V the Black Bear is still alive and at the zoo. She's just in her torpor (sort of hibernating) state due to her old age. Also was told its "too early" to know if new Lions are coming to replace Nala and Serena.
  • 2 of the nocturnal exhibits in PC&A are covered in a tarp.
  • Meuller Gibbons have moved to the top row of primate exhibits. Black Howler Monkeys have moved into their exhibit in Aquatics.
  • The primate exhibit across from the Lemurs (next to aquatics) is being refurbished.
  • Made sure to watch the Elephant bath presentation that's part of winter weekends. Always worth a watch if you can catch it.
Primate Forest
  • Lots of activity today. The last of the plants/theming have been removed after the fire and it's down to the bare brick walls.
  • A new sidewalk is being added from the Stork lot towards the zoo and ticket plaza. I’m guessing this is preparation for when Primate Forest envelops the current pathway.

It seems when zoos start to cover up older exhibits they don’t get new residents for a while, or even ever sadly.

Went to Cleveland today.

Main Zoo
  • The flamingo exhibit is temporarily closed and double barricaded.
  • The two crowned lemur exhibits are taped off.
  • The large mixed exhibit on the upper level of PC&A is now under refurbishment.
  • Ruskin the elderly red panda is now living in the Asian Highlands exhibit.
    • The old leopard exhibit in Africa is still signed for red pandas.
  • Saw Marta, the new Amur leopard and caught a glimpse of V the Black Bear as she took a few steps outside then turned back inside.
  • Construction seems to be progressing on the new kangaroo barn.
  • Treetops Cafe (outside PC&A) is undergoing renovation.
Primate Forest
  • More of the Lion parking lot, behind the ticket building, has been fenced off for construction.
  • Fencing is starting to go up along the new sidewalk.

Spent the morning at Cleveland today.

Main Zoo
  • The entrance plaza is being repaved. The Flamingo and Tortoise habitat is blocked off.
  • Two new (1.1) red pandas have arrived at the zoo. The employee I talked to didn't know the second ones name, but one of them is named Poppy
  • Andean bears were no shows.
  • Ruskin, the elderly Panda, is back in the African Savanna exhibit
  • The old gift shop in PC&A is now “Calm Cove”, a quiet room.
  • The model of Primate Forest is now on display in the guest service building at the entrance.
Primate Forest
  • Construction on the new parking lot is picking up steam.
  • No new progress on the building itself.
  • The Stork lot has a new exit and the new sidewalk is finished.
  • Trees have been cleared in front of the existing sidewalk.
