WRS Mandai expansion plans

are all of the sun bears now in RW?
When I visited on 17th Feb (Monday), there was a Sun Bear on display at Singapore Zoo. I wonder how many Sun Bears Mandai has.

And also, side note, it's kinda annoying how RW can now refer to River Wonders or to Rainforest Wild.

What about the 2 Siamese crocodiles? I'd guess one of the false gharials will move back to Panjang's former enclosure which also kept them years ago

I know that all the siamangs have been moved over from the zoo and the dholes might be the 2nd pack formerly kept in Night Safari but are all of the sun bears now in RW?

Unless Mandai wants to gamble with putting the two siamese crocs with Panjang.. the only other water bodies that are around watering hole are for the tapirs and one flex habitat

I heard that all the sun bears will eventually move to RF asia but for now its just the females that have moved. The zoo still has male(s)

There is still 1.0 Sun Bear at the Zoo (1.2 in total at Mandai). I guess they are keeping the male at the Zoo for now to avoid leaving the exhibit empty.

For the False Gharials, other than the 6 or so adults at Treetops Trail (which is ideal for their breeding), the rest are juveniles not suited to move to RFW for now. (Panjang is dwarfed by his new pool at RFW, i can't imagine how anyone could see the juvenile False Gharials if they're housed there.)

Maybe Mandai could display the crocodiles at different times of the day.

I personally don't see a possible way of doing so. Most Crocodile exhibits don't utilise a constant switch system from what I am aware and the original holding area that panjang was kept before being released is not exactly nice for any croc to stay in if I say so

How about creating new water bodies between the Siamang area and the Langur area at The Canopy? I saw they've cut down the trees to separate those two areas and its quite a large patch of land area that is 'barren' now. Access to the holding areas may be an issue though.

Or perhaps.. let the other crocodilians roam free along the streams that can be found in some of the walking treks - that surely will heighten the immersion! :D:D:D

Knowing some Singaporeans and tourists free roaming crocodiles would be a terrible idea

Honestly I don’t really like the idea of more activities like the free fall and net thing(I forgot it’s name) cause many tourists and generally Singaporeans would not go to a zoo to do these activities. I see what idea Mandai had with this but it just won’t work out and the lack of Animals isn’t helping either. But I do want to know what you guys think.

After my visit, I initially felt the same way as you. But after sharing my thoughts with friends over the past few days, my perspective started to change. Instead of seeing this as a traditional zoo, I now think of it more as a beautiful family-friendly park that just happens to have some animals. From a business perspective, its main audience isn’t hardcore animal lovers but rather people who don’t have much outdoor adventure experience but are curious to try—especially teenagers.

Also, I feel like the park has followed the same design approach as the bird paradise, where visitors explore the exhibits from the inside rather than just watching from the outside. Since it's mainly focused on mammals, there’s naturally a limit to how diverse the animal collection can be. But that’s just my personal take—for now.

Once it officially opens and all the animals are in place, I’m especially excited to see how the open-concept primate exhibits in the canopy layer turn out!

It was meant to be a joke. :D:D:D

I think you underestimate how many children visit the Mandai parks and how some parents are willing to splurge for their offsprings). :)

I find these activities are still in-line with the more adventure theme and blends better with its surrounding as compared to the areas that are meant for children in the zoo (e.g. kidzworld and the rope course).

I also wish for more animals in the park, but there are not many suitable animals that can be displayed either. Since they want to retain as much mature vegetations as possible, it also limits the space that can be utilised. I can see Mandai creating another otter exhibit, but do we really need it? :p

Didn't they advertise 36 species? Currently we have 28, so there are hopefully a few odds and ends that may be added.

Still hope they make some space for the 2 Siamese crocodiles (and also the Chinese alligators) who deserve better than an exhibit meant for turtles. Don't know why they tore down their exhibit near Sungei Buaya (but at least the African dwarf crocodile is back now). Philippine crocodiles got a decently sized exhibit at least

If anything, looks like the aviary could squeeze in a few more birds and perhaps a binturong or ASCO exhibit would be good to see here.

Wonder what Africa will add besides okapi and Coquerel’s sifakas as Mandai doesn't have as many African rainforest species, guessing pygmy hippos, bongos, some monkeys like De Brazza's and colobus monkeys and the other lemurs will be there

For Rainforest Wild Africa, Diana's Monkey, Red-bellied lemur and Okapi have been acquired already. As zooish mentioned, acquiring Coquerel's sifaka is gonna be quite difficult. From what I am aware of there are plans to move all the Pygmy hippos from the zoo over as well. There are plans for an otter exhibit as well although no species is stated

The pygmy hippo exhibits in the zoo are quite small so it'd be better for them to have much bigger exhibits tho I don't know what the zoo will put in their place. Surprised they'd want to do an African otter species rather than another ASCO exhibit for RW Asia

My information might be outdated but there was only 1 Pygmy Hippo exhibit (essentially a moat with a primate island in the middle) in the plans I came across. So some hippos might remain at the Zoo as it offers underwater viewing.

I've noticed that the Rainforest Wild exhibits eschew glass viewing windows (to simulate real life wild conditions i suppose) with the exception of the 2 small exhibits in Sentinal Foodhall and the glass barriers in the Cavern.

It makes sense regarding the pygmy hippo to have more or just several locations for their somewhat larger troupe! With the current 3.3, they could have a family group at each location....

Population currently stands at 1.3, after the recent transfer of 1.0 "Thabo" to Taipei Zoo and the passing of 1.0 "Bubu" who is Thabo's sire (about 34 years old).
