Zoo Berlin will remain closed until at least January 13th as a preventive measure because of the outbreak of foot and mouth disease in Brandenburg, close to Berlin.
Let us hope this issue can be resolved as soon as possible and that these two great collection will not have to remain closed for too long, or will be further affected by this.
Zoo Berlin
Sad news, he was a very impressive bull, one of the most impressive I've seen in person.Elephant bull Viktor lost his life unexpectedly last night. He was monitored by vets due to weight loss.

An unfortunate loss since he was one of the only breeding individuals in their herd and was still quite young at only 24 years of age (b. 22-09-2000).Elephant bull Viktor lost his life unexpectedly last night. He was monitored by vets due to weight loss.

It's a real tragedy given his age and lack of breeding success, not to mention he was a truly spectacular bull and much loved by his keepers. I could have sworn he was born in 1993 though, not 2000?An unfortunate loss since he was one of the only breeding individuals in their herd and was still quite young at only 24 years of age (b. 22-09-2000).
I wonder how this will impact the planned new Elephant House and outdoor exhibit in the Extension Area across the bridge. Will it speed it up or slow it down? Is there a planning timeline for the new elephant habitat to be built yet?
Berlin Zoo currently holds the following individuals now:
F Carla b. 10-05-1977
F Drumbo (Mary) b. 25-09-1987
F Pang Pha 30-9-1987
F Anchali b. 12-8-2012
They have also had a history of losing younger individuals / calves:
Play Kiri b. 05-04-2000 - deceased 28-12-2000 (obduction: Herpes infection - as did likewise her sire/father Kibo - unfortunately).
Shaina Pali b. 14-07-2005 deceased 05-04-2011 (obduction: Herpes infection).
Ko Raya b. 15-03-2009 - deceased 27-05-2011 (obduction: Herpes infection).

NOTA BENE:
a) The above obduction data stem from various German language news outlets.
b) Since 2012, the zoo has no longer bred their only breeding cow Pang Pha....
c) The zoo was not given a recommendation for a new bull - while bull Victor should have left the collection a few years back. Just the EEP/EAZA would no longer advice on a new bull given their recent past history with their ex situ conservation breeding stats.....
Given the number of herpes deaths ..., a major concern for Zoo Berlin is veterinary health management for the current herd. I don't see realistically that the current facilities are will survive another decade ..., it is just a cement monstrosity that needs to be taken down and a new state of the art Elephant House built. It's a real tragedy given his age and lack of breeding success, not to mention he was a truly spectacular bull and much loved by his keepers. Regarding the new exhibit, last I was aware that was still a long-term goal but no actual development had been started. Instead, a new ape house has been prioritised and will be built in the area previously designated for an elephant complex over the Canal. That in itself was a shame, given how much the elephants needed a new exhibit, but with Victor's passing and the almost guarantee that Berlin will not house a bull for an extended period of time I can't imagine it's pushed it further up the agenda. Perhaps with some space freed they will consider redeveloping the current exhibit instead but truth is until more time has passed and word comes directly from the Zoo it's impossible to say.
I never quite understood the plan for the elephants at the Zoo even when he was still around. I can only assume they didn't intend to breed again, given the lack of space and seeming lack of intention to move any of the current elephants on. It does mean one of the most eligible bulls in Europe will be far too underrepresented going forwards, and the Zoo has an empty bull paddock to somehow fill.
I don't remember the exact order of enclosures (I have the whole thing listed but not in order) but I do recall that the slender lorises are very close to the entrance. If they aren't in the second enclosure they are in the third.I'm going to visit Berlin Zoo and Tierpark next month. One of my main objectives is to visit the nocturnal animal area of the Zoo, since the last time I visited it, I couldn't see it because the predator building was under construction.
Could anyone tell me the order of the exhibits and what species are in them? I've read that it has light in the early morning and one of my main objectives to photograph is the slender loris and I'd like to go there straight away without wasting a second of time. Thanks!!
That is sad news but a good age. How many orangutan are left in Berlin?

Does 0:1 Njamuk (1990) Mano x Bini not reside there anymore? They have Bini who is 44 and Bulan who is 15. Bulan is the son of Bini and Mano, when I visited he seemed to live on his own next to Mano and Bini. From what I understood in the announcement, they are planning to phase out the orangutans, but might also have misunderstood it as my German is not very good.
'Mücke'/'Njamuk' has been living at Monde Sauvage, in Belgium, since 2020 where she has since had a daughter named 'Soraya'Does 0:1 Njamuk (1990) Mano x Bini not reside there anymore?
