ZOO Dvůr Králové Dvůr Králové

A currently started campaign to promote animal adoptions to potential donors in pre-Christmas time brough some snippets of animal info not mentioned here previously I think.

Two white-throated monitors obtained in February 2024 are both females. The zoo is searching for a male but there is shortage of them in European zoos.

The male chimpansee Guis that arrived in May 2024 is undergoing very slow introduction process of meeting with various members of the Dvur´s group. He has still not met female "M" yet who is his intended bride (the only female in the group he has recomendation to breed with).

The original breeding pair of African pygmy-falcons came 2022 from Mr. Glatt - the owner of the private Zoopark Nehvizdy. Currently Dvur keeps 7 birds and all are bts. 4 of them are chicks hatched in Dvur in 2024. The zoo waits till that groups grows more before it will place some on show.

Dvur had good season with maneless zebras. Three colts were born 2024 and are alive. A male born April and two females born in July and November. Considering how struggling is the zoo population of this subspecies in Europe, this is very welcomed.

I'm glad the remaining aardwolves are doing fine and their offspring has survived.
Seems like there may be a future for this species in Europe, at least for the next decade.

I visited Dvur not too long ago (just before the arrival of the aardwolves and brown hyenas...) but should really consider a revisit to Zlin in the next few years!

Dvur Kralove has become a member of PAAZA (Pan-African Association of Zoos and Aquaria).

This is the first Czech zoo that decided to join African association, some others are members of other odd regional ones. Zlin is a member of SEAZA (Southeast Asian Zoos and Aquariums Association) since a few years ago. And several Czech zoos are EARAZA members - however Prague froze its membership after start of Ukraine war.

Any updates on when the leopard twins will leave?
Sorry, no idea.

In other news, the male chimpanzee Dingo (50) died on 3rd of January. Necropsy found blunt trauma that caused internal bleeding, otherwise he was in good health. He was found unwell on 1st in the morning so the zoo thinks his demise might be connected with new year fireworks and pyrotchnics used by locals.

A flamingo was also found dead on 1st in the morning, with several trauma.

That is unfortunate, fireworks really are a huge problem for zoos, just this morning Wronclaw posted about 2 people who, whilst still in the zoo grounds, lit a very loud and bright multi-shot firework and the zoo is very angry and distressed about the matter, luckily no injury has been reported in any animal, but it is still a shame such stubborn people still roam around zoos.

The zoo confirmed it received 50 wild-caught birds of 4 African species from Slovak animal rescue station in Velky Krtis late last year. They were part of the confiscated batch from illegal trade. The article mentions that among others Plzen and Zlin also agreed and accepted some birds. Slovak zoos took in 300-400 birds themselves. (distribution of confiscated birds to various Czech zoos is coordinated by Czech ministry upon request for help by Slovak officials).

  • Chestnut-bellied starling (Lamprotornis pulcher)
  • Rüppell's starling (Lamprotornis purpuroptera)
  • Long-tailed glossy starling (Lamprotornis caudatus)
  • Piapiac (Ptilostomus afer)
The birds are currently placed in Dvur Kralove´s quarantine and are nursed back to health. After they are cleared and stabilised, DNA tested for sex and paired, they will be offered to other interested zoos.

5 Humboldt's Penguins have hatched recently.
Safari Park Dvůr Králové on Instagram: "Malí tučňáci jsou venku! Those five penguins hatched last year. The post talks about the fact they've just left the "kindergarten" and so they are now on show with the rest of the group.
