Asian Elephants in Europe 2025

Since a few weeks, there are a lot of visitor pictures on Facebook of Timber together with the 2 young males, and it seems that they get along great.

That's because he recently came out of musth. As long as he is in musth though, he cannot get along with any other elephant.

I know timber has some issues getting along with the younger bulls, so I would not be at all surprised if that was a reasonable part of why they were looking to move him along. And of course, he could have very easily bred any of the cows prior to his departure.

I thought the young bulls were already kept apart. I know Emmen is able to hold a bachelor herd with all of their "luck".

As far as I’m aware, he gets along fine with the youngest males, but has issues with the older adolescents.

The young bull "Yadanar" is on the move from Heidelberg to a zoo in the Netherlands. There are a few options here, as Amersfoort, Rotterdam and Eindhoven are all in need of new bulls (although AFAIK, Rotterdam is still set to receive Nuka from Hungary, however considering how long ago that news came out, I wouldn't be entirely surprised if that plan has changed). I've heard rumblings that Wildlands might be looking to move Timber along as well, so perhaps a multi facility, multi bull move? I think the only safe option to strike out would be Artis, considering Sibu arrived less than a year ago.
Zoo Heidelberg has confirmed that Yadanar will move to Wildlands.

How does the Emmer Asiatic elephant herd look like nowadays (in terms of make-up and members)?
1,0 Timber

1,0 Mauk
1,0 Manoa

0,1 Mingalar Oo
0,1 Ma Yay Yee
0,1 Swhe Zin

The two young bulls Mauk and Manoa are already often separate from the herd. Timber is with them when he is not in musth, if he is then he stands alone.

Wildlands also confirmed today that Yadanar will move to them in a few weeks. The EEP has made breeding recommendations for two of the three elephant cows in Emmen.

Which of the two cows received a breeding recommendation? anybody knows?
thanks a lot

Timber moved from Wildlands to Eindhoven Zoo yesterday.
Eindhoven Zoo has now also officially confirmed his arrival. Timber will stay separately from the herd for the first two weeks, after which he will be introduced to the rest of the herd step by step. If all goes well, Timber could provide offspring with Jing in the future.

A day after Timber's move, new breeding bull Yadanar arrived in Emmen from Heidelberg. He too will first stay apart from the other elephants for a while but will then be introduced to both the two young bulls and the three cows. There is a breeding recommendation for the cows Ma Ya Yee and Shwe Zin.

The wildlands link wouldn't work. In fact, the FB page didn't exist.

I would have loved to see the announcement.

New elephant bull arrives in WILDLANDS - WILDLANDS

Yadanar's arrival announced on the Zoo's website since the FB link did not work. I was able to translate the page into English.

A new Asian elephant bull has arrived at WILDLANDS Adventure Zoo Emmen: Khin Yadanar Min, or Yadanar for short. It comes from the German Zoo Heidelberg as part of the European Species Conservation Program (EEP). This program ensures that the elephant population in zoos remains genetically healthy and socially stable. The 'weighty' transport arrived at the end of the afternoon on Tuesday and went smoothly and quickly. The new bull was already eating quietly in the stable after an hour.

A natural step within the EEP
A day before the arrival of this 15-year-old bull, the 27-year-old bull Timber left for Eindhoven Zoo. Yadanar will take over his role as a breeding bull in Emmen. Here he will spend time with both the cows and the young males, which is in line with the natural behavior of his peers in the wild. For two of the female elephants, the EEP has made a breeding recommendation, which means that young elephants may be born in the future.

Prior to the change of bulls, animal caretakers from Emmen went to Heidelberg to get acquainted with the bull and caretakers from Eindhoven Zoo visited Emmen. In addition, two caretakers from Emmen traveled with Timber to Eindhoven to guide him during his first moments in the new environment. Two animal caretakers from Heidelberg also came with Yadanar to guide him out of the moving box and in the coming days they will also teach the caretakers in Emmen everything about the character of the elephant.

The next few days

The bull now first gets the opportunity to get used to his new home. The elephant enclosure in Emmen has a large outdoor area with plenty of opportunity to swim and an indoor area, also with a large water feature. At first, he is separated from the herd and is introduced step by step to the rest of the two young men and the three ladies. The elephant could already be seen by visitors, as it is allowed to explore the enclosure at its own pace.

With this change, WILDLANDS actively contributes to the conservation of the endangered Asian elephant and the herd in Emmen lives in the most socially natural way possible.
