New elephant bull arrives in WILDLANDS - WILDLANDS
Yadanar's arrival announced on the Zoo's website since the FB link did not work. I was able to translate the page into English.
A new Asian elephant bull has arrived at WILDLANDS Adventure Zoo Emmen: Khin Yadanar Min, or Yadanar for short. It comes from the German Zoo Heidelberg as part of the European Species Conservation Program (EEP). This program ensures that the elephant population in zoos remains genetically healthy and socially stable. The 'weighty' transport arrived at the end of the afternoon on Tuesday and went smoothly and quickly. The new bull was already eating quietly in the stable after an hour.
A natural step within the EEP
A day before the arrival of this 15-year-old bull, the 27-year-old bull Timber left for Eindhoven Zoo. Yadanar will take over his role as a breeding bull in Emmen. Here he will spend time with both the cows and the young males, which is in line with the natural behavior of his peers in the wild. For two of the female elephants, the EEP has made a breeding recommendation, which means that young elephants may be born in the future.
Prior to the change of bulls, animal caretakers from Emmen went to Heidelberg to get acquainted with the bull and caretakers from Eindhoven Zoo visited Emmen. In addition, two caretakers from Emmen traveled with Timber to Eindhoven to guide him during his first moments in the new environment. Two animal caretakers from Heidelberg also came with Yadanar to guide him out of the moving box and in the coming days they will also teach the caretakers in Emmen everything about the character of the elephant.
The next few days
The bull now first gets the opportunity to get used to his new home. The elephant enclosure in Emmen has a large outdoor area with plenty of opportunity to swim and an indoor area, also with a large water feature. At first, he is separated from the herd and is introduced step by step to the rest of the two young men and the three ladies. The elephant could already be seen by visitors, as it is allowed to explore the enclosure at its own pace.
With this change, WILDLANDS actively contributes to the conservation of the endangered Asian elephant and the herd in Emmen lives in the most socially natural way possible.
