Perth Zoo Perth Zoo News 2025

Strange to me though that they didn't ever let Putra Mas and Permai whilst at perth zoo have small interactions for short periods of time...

Permai was pretty lonely and maybe them acutally being able to interact and swim together etc not through a fence could have helped....

Possibly he has a bad personality/temperament around other elephants I'm not aware of so please let me know if so :)

During mating attempts, Permai was noted to have shown fear/apprehension, which led to Putra Mas becoming aggressive in response.

Any socials issues would be compounded by the fact Perth have a small exhibit with limited escape routes for the female; and that Permai (while at Perth in the final years) lacked a support system of females during visits from the bull, which would have brought her reassurance.

Thanks Zoofan :)

Poor Putra mas :( I understand maybe he was aggressive but everyone's worried for the welfare of Permai and Permai this and poor Permai that, even though she had a far larger enclosure and had way more interactions with keepers :( I feel like just because he's a bull doesn't mean he doesn't have the same feelings as Permai :( And he never even had a companinion in the first place like Permai did.... In the wild Bulls don't stay with females but will move to different herds regularly enjoying exposure to different elephants where'as Putra mas walks in circles in his enclosure whilst Permai is felt sorry for when she used to pace :(

Unfortunately due to being a bull, it’s standard protocol that Putra Mas is managed in protected contact (versus the cows Perth’s keepers would go in with). That’s been the case since he was an adolescent. Nonetheless, he does have a range of keeper interactions - training etc. which he reportedly enjoys.

Monarto’s complex will offer Putra Mas a vast array of social opportunities. If breeding is successful, he may even be able to fulfill a mentor role to male offspring down the line. :)

Why not keep Putra Mas for trial period with the cow group and see what happens.... I find it all a tad "contrived" to keep him separate... Sure in musth, but otherwise ... take a jump!
If he’s in with the girls then the keepers can’t be. Plus as others have said, in the wild he wouldn’t be with them unless for breeding.

from what I saw on Tuesday he will be able to see the girls (they where doing work on the paddock so I didn’t get the best look)

as for him at Perth zoo , he and the girls could be near each other with a gate between them , on one of my vists after Trisha pasted I did see him and permai at the gate

I have heard word of a new Tasmanian Devil enclosure at Perth zoo that has just opened... If anyone has info that would be great.
Where did you hear that? I might be going in a few days if nothing comes up so I might be able to check:): Edit and where would it be located?

Perth Zoo celebrated 30 years of local Conservation organisation, Free The Bears, While internationally, news broke of two more Bears saved life of suffering. 30 years of Free the Bears

That’s cool to hear the founder of Free the Bears (Mary Hutton) was a Perth resident.

New Zealand’s only sun bear (Sasa) was sired by Sean/Suki, who came to Wellington Zoo from Perth Zoo. He was one of three bears imported by Perth via Free the Bears in 1998.

Taronga Zoo’s sun bear (Mary) is named in honour of Mary Hutton.

Anyone know the name of the freshwater croc at perth zoo? I've never seen it and wondered if it's always been the same one....
