Woodside Wildlife and Falconry Park Woodside Wildlife Park news

Judging by a post on Facebook it looks like a former Curator of Chester Zoo has joined the team at Woodside Wildlife Park - a rather surprising development, but potentially an exciting one!

An extremely positive development, and one which I fully expect will lead to great things happening at Woodside in the coming years - it's definitely become one to watch in a single stroke, in my opinion.

Yes Tim Rowlands has been at Marwell for the the last two years sorry to see him go but it did not work out, wish him well at Woodside.

Yes I thought he was at Marwell - surprised he has moved on already but there are many possible reasons why this could be. I'll be watching what happens at Woodside even more closely now!

On February 25th, 2024, the zoo announced they were constructing a new mixed-species exhibit called Wild Amazonia for their capybaras and lowland tapir, as well as (2.0) Columbian black spider monkeys named Diego and Rodrigo which opened in late March.

Woodside will receive Sumatran Tiger for the first time in early 2025. Until now they have held hybrid's and a single Amur female (on temporary loan).

They will receive female, Nila from Zoo Reynou in France. She was originally born at Chester in October 2011 and lived at Le PAL for several years before relocating to Reynou. Reynou has recently received a new female to pair with their male (Nila's brother) so hence Nila's transfer out, to make room.

Has Nila(Sumatran tiger) arrived yet? Julia is hybrid tiger rescued from a circus I've read on their website, anyone know how old she is?

Post today on the park's social media indicating that something new and 'wild' is coming soon... is this a reference to the Sumatran Tiger mentioned previously, or something else? Any thoughts on what the paw prints shown in the picture are?

It’s definitely not a tiger paw print. A lot of the comments on FB say sloth bear, but it’s not a bear paw print either. I’m sure someone clever on here will be able to identify it.

I had a peek at the footprint images in A Field Guide to the Carnivores of the World, and compared it to the photograph. This is what I can determine:

1. The pictured track clearly has five toes on each foot. That allows all cats, dogs, hyenas and mongooses to be ruled out, as they all have just four toes.
2. The five-toed carnivores are the bears, some of the euplerids, the viverrids, procyonids, red panda, skunks and mustelids.
3. To me, the size of the 'heel' of the main pad, plus the proximity of the toes to the pad itself, all suggest a bear. The fact that the label suggests that it is 'Big changes' also suggests something large, as opposed to a smaller carnivore.

I think is probably is a bear paw print, on balance - I couldn't identify exactly which species though.

Not sloth bear as suggested, but what about sun bear. They are rounder aren't they?

Oooh, I hope you're right! I had wondered about bears myself - potential new home for the Spectacled Bears from South Lakes perhaps? That would be amazing!

They’ve just posted another update on FB. It confirms a bear(s) will be arriving but not what sort. They are also changing their name to Lincoln Zoo.
Judging by that teaser, I'm going to assume it's either a Sloth bear, Spectacled bear or maybe an Asian black bear.

Also, have any Sumatran tigers joined the collection yet? Will they be going in a new exhibit or are they replacing the one that's already there?

So apart from Woodside & Edinburgh(great new additions for both collections) what other UK collections have Sloth Bears?
