Unfortunately that boost is to the most populous species. We need to find remaining pockets of Sumatran Orangs.
And might I just add this is just another case of oops - we missed a couple thousand during the last census (African Elephants, Western Lowland Gorillas, now Orangs - I wonder who's next)!
Actually this is a much rarer subspecies of Borneon Orangutan, the Black Borneon or Pongo pymaeus morio.
Interesting but presumably 'black' is not literal and means they are very dark(maroon) rather than really black?

And hopefully a lot more "oops" are in order when it comes to any rare species in the wild. Isn't that better than oops - there aren't as many as we had originally thought?![]()
