I’m more than glad the Menagerie was able to contribute to the European population with these chicks! It will certainly be beneficial for this critically endangered species in the long-term.Birth of 2 Edwards's pheasant (Lophura edwardsi).
Yes, he said so in his post.[Edit] It appears the news relates to a new female, who joined the menagerie’s already present males. Is that correct?
I've seen at least 1 Pallas Cat (as a furball in a corner of the enclosure) today in the Ménagerie.Additionally, I should also mention that the owl cage where the Yellow-Throated Martens used to be was signed for a Pallas’s Cat (Otocolobus manul), that I, unfortunately, did not see.
Regardless, this should hopefully mark the return of the species to the Menagerie’s collection!
I had the chance to see the Martens and the Clouded Leopards very active when I visited the Ménagerie for last time, in mid-July. The Carnivore House isn't the best place for Caracals because it's a ground-dwelling species, it would be better to house a species that use the upper levels of the enclosure (Ocelot, Margay, Leopard Cat...) and to relocate the Caracals in another place, for example in one of the enclosures behind the Steppe Foxes exhibit.I went to the Ménagerie today. I don't have much to report, but I was pleasantly surprised by the most recent changes (or maybe not so recent... this was my first visit in years). It is not so bad after all, just really, really old.
Signage is actually pretty good overall. I quite liked the more recent signage like at the tasmanian devils.
The caracals are obviously uncomfortable in the big cat house. However the building would feel too empty without them... the yellow-throated martens are really cool but are mostly napping outside of feeding time.
The orangutan enclosure is nearing completion. The metal structure is quite impressive, I know some zoo enthusiasts will be disappointed by the relatively small space but realistically I think they couldn't have done much better than this. Don't ask too much! Now I'm curious what they are going to do with the monkey house, which I always found to be especially depressing and ugly.
Visitors were really chill, I didn't hear any complaints about the lack of big animals or anything, and they showed interest for all types of animals.
