North America Western Lowland Gorilla Population

Does anyone know why when new breeding groups are formed they typically pick 1 male and 3 females? Just a pattern I’ve noticed and been curious about why the SSP does that!

Females feel supported when other females are present; but with regards to having three females in a troop specifically, the silverback will often have a favourite female. Having three females rather than two ensures one single female isn’t on the outside.

It also safeguards against the reduction of a troop to 1.1 adults should one female unexpectedly die (which unfortunately happened in an Australia Zoo earlier this year).

1 male and 3 females is usually the best number. Any less than 3 females isn't often recommended due to the need for balance of social dynamics. Two females will likely constantly bicker and fight with one another for social status. So that's why a third is necessary.

Any more than three is fine - but the SSP does have to ensure every breeding group has enough females, so you won't find more than three or four breeding females at a facility for that reason.

Toronto Zoo has announced on their social media channels that 0.1 Johari will be moved to another AZA facility in the near future on an SSP recommendation.

Exciting for her, sad for Toronto as she was the last offspring of two of Toronto's original gorillas, Charles and Josephine.

She's been living on her own for quite some time now due to her not getting along with some of the other gorillas, I believe it was Kojo who she had issues with. I hope they receive some more gorillas to accompany her or at least send her somewhere else to join a retirement troop.
I am unsure how much space ABQ Zoo has for gorillas and if they can hold a non-breeding/retirement group. If not, I would hope management and SSP expediently move her on to a facility where she can either be part of another family group or integrated into an elderly non-breeding group.

ABQ has two outdoor enclosures - one for the breeding group and the other for the bachelor group.

Matadi recently moved to Sedgewick last year however, so she's no longer on her own.

It's interesting that San Antonio will essentially have a group founded by three half sisters (sharing the same sire); which is quite unusual genetically speaking. Two of the females, Merry Leigh and Anaka, also share the same maternal grandparents. And the other female, the same maternal grandfather.

With that in mind, I wonder whether we'll end up seeing all three females breeding. Even though all three females come from rather unrepresented lines.

(1.0) western lowland gorilla Cecil will be transferred from Louisville Zoo in Kentucky to San Francisco Zoo in California in the upcoming days.

Cecil’s San Francisco Journey
That's interesting move considering Cecil's age - and the fact that he's lived in a bachelor group almost his entire life. I wonder whether dynamics within his bachelor troop have influenced this selection.

In saying that, it's overall great news - he should have two females that he should be able to mate with, so hopefully we can expect births at San Francisco in the coming years.
