Pairi Daiza Pairi Daiza News 2025

A female white faced saki arrived to accompany the male. Presumably they will move to the sanctuary soon.

Another reindeer calf has been born, it's a female.

And what about SANCTUARY ? It is just a few weeks from 1st of july and we haven't heard much. I
When I visited a while ago, a window was open. You could already see mock rock and plants through it (the window was also like more than 10 meters high) so plants are already growing well. More and more species seem to arrive too, for example the Tropicalia greenhouse is stocked right now, and golden lion tamarins and now a white faced saki arrived too. Of course the park doesn't mention they are going to move to the sanctuary, but it seems likely. So I think the opening date Eric Domb himself mentioned (August) could be likely, but of course I can't know what still needs to be done in the sanctuary.

Asian Elephant Pregnancies:

0.1 Farina (2003) and 0.1 Luna (2019) are both pregnant. The father is 1.0 Ta Wan (2017) who's since moved to Ausburg.

He's related to both cows - so their pregnancies have come as a surprise.

Reported in the Population thread.

For clarification: Both females are Ta Wan's half-sisters.

Farina is his maternal half-sister, while Luna is his paternal half-sister. Edit: Luna is also his half-niece because Farina is her mother!

Yikes.

After all, this is the result of the "no surplus" guy who will do anything to care for his animals, even inbreed them... Isn't that true love?
The birth of this animal was an accident. Ta Wan was simply able to breed with Farina way earlier than he should be... this could have happened at any other zoo, so I don't see what you are trying to say here.

I feel you guys are way too harsh here. This baby is very valueable for his family group and will enrich the social life of the herd greatly. He is not ‚worthless‘ because he is inbred. Inbreeding does happen in the wild too and it‘s usually not a big problem and not even a reason to never breed from him. But he is from a big family so no need for this. Se he will probably never get a breeding group himself, correct, but the same is true for many other bull calves!

I certainly agree with you about the inbreeding part, it must happen in familial groups in the wild too where bulls remain in the group well after they are fertile and before leaving. (same with gorillas I think too). In a carefully structured/managed population its unlikely he will get the chance to breed himself, but its certainly not the huge negative some are portraying.

I do think this inbreeding story should be cautionary tale for the possible future keeping in and moving out of family groups of young elephant bulls. It would definitely be preferable if things like this did not happen again.
