Singapore Zoo Singapore Zoo News 2025

I'm back today, and I see the baby. Today's groups should be Togo's group. The oldest looking male's facial markings seem to resemble the interpretive with his name. It's currently noon, so they are just laying around, and the baby is only occasionally visible. The mother (the one on the right in the the photos) does appear to be the same one in the video (white markings on the left of her upper lip, and a faint line down the center of the upper lips), so it may be Asha. If I see their keeper I will try to clarify who is who.

I'm quite confident the mother is Asha based on photos I've found of her - she's a spitting image of her mother. It's certainly not any of the older females, so it's ultimately between her and Akinyi. Akinyi has a much 'skinnier' frame, much like her mother, Gangga.

From old videos the ages of the two girls in question would likely be;

Asha (b. 2008-2010)
Akinyi (b.2010-2012)

The other chimp in this photo that's holding the infant looks like Nini.

@KaiGoesMandai has edited to confirm the mother is Asha (daughter of Ida).

It doesn’t surprise as the mother (clearly a young female) doesn’t look like any of the chimpanzees from Biddy’s line, which is extensively represented in Australasia via her granddaughters Sacha (1980) and Sally (1985) and their sons; with Sacha’s three sons in turn having sired several infants between them.

To be honest, the late Ida, and her daughter Asha look a lot like Central Chimpanzees. So that would explain why she looks a lot different to the rest of the troop which are presumed to be mostly Western.

Although we don't know whether Asha was sired by Togo; the candidates for the sire of this latest offspring would be out of Togo (1972) or his young son, Jengo (2012).

Togo (1972) is still the alpha, but considering his age, it’s only a matter of time before Jengo (2012) takes over as alpha male. In smaller troops, the support of females is still important; but with less of them, even a single female (king maker) is all it would take to instigate a change - as well as the young adult male presumably having a strong desire to assume the role.

Very interesting to compare it to Taronga’s community where no male realistically stands a chance of overthrowing Jengo’s cousins.

Jengo's mother is the alpha female - so he certainly has a lot of support to eventually take over from his father. To make things, even better - he has no compeition! Although it will be interesting to learn the sex of Asha's latest offspring.

I wonder whether, in the event Togo passes, they consider attemptting to integrate the two groups. I believe the other group only has one? male. It's referred to as 'Natty's group' which makes me think 'Natty' is the alpha male - but it's also possible it's just an older female, and the male is instead 'Mosi'.

Hi guys, does anyone know how long Panjang is? I can’t seem to find any sources online that states his length. I’m doing a little personal project so I’m just curious to know. Thanks!

Don't think he has grown much since, but last measurement I know of in 2022 was 4.6 metres long, he was around 740 kilos back then too.

They may have measured him again when he was transferred to Rainforest Park

Thanks! It’s crazy how big saltwater crocs can get. I thought he was 5m. Are there any other interesting facts about him?

Does anyone know what’s happening with the giant tortoise and Komodo dragon section of the zoo? The map states that it’s still under construction

  1. the Grevy's Zebras in the giraffe enclosure and Gila Monsters are missing
  2. 1.1 Lesser Mousedeer from Fragile Forest are now in the old Greater Mousedeer exhibit
  3. signage for Dusky Turtle Dove at Fragile Forest has been removed
are the L'hoest's Monkeys, Painted Terrapins, Alligator Snapping Turtles and Javan Langur still on show?

Hopefully to be replaced by the "supposed" Guatemalan Beaded Lizards (H. h. charlesbogerti) that had been sitting in the back-of-house forever, if they are even still around. Those animals even laid eggs in 2021, not sure what happened to those as the current keepers weren't even aware of their presence the last time I asked.
