Zoo Bojnice Bojnice Zoo

The zoo now already keeps 2.1 brown bear babies found orphaned this year within Slovakia. They are blood-unrelated to each other. They live in nice large forested enclosure (off-show). The zoo is trying to find new homes for them in other zoos. Because next spring new bear cubs will be probably found so they need free capacity to accept more.

Today I visited Bojnice, and in aviaries closest to the entrance are some very interesting species of birds not mentioned on their website: blue-throated barbet (Psilopogon asiaticus), Abyssinian roller (Coracias abyssinicus), spangled cotinga (Cotinga cayana), pinyon jay (Gymnorhinus cyanocephalus), Asian fairy-bluebird (Irena puella) and African golden oriole (Oriolus auratus). Plush-crested jay (Cyanocorax chrysops) is in one of the mixed aviaries on the way to Carpathian lynx enclosure. Also, bear pits and most of the outdoor enclosures in the monkey house (except orangutan´s and mantled guereza´s) are being reconstructed.

Every species was signed and I didn´t see anything unsigned, which was nice (Looking at you, Pilsen). Another thing I forgot to mention, those horrible small cages for small cats and common genet between mouflon exhibit and parrot cages are empty. Hope they´ll get demolished or maybe reconstructed and used for something appropriate, like small birds.

Two days ago, a free-running serval appeared in streets of town Svidník in east Slovakia. Locals caught it with help of fish net and a blanket and turned it to authorities. The animal had no identification chip and no owner have come forward, it was probably illegal pet and owner doesnt want to be prosecuted and stays silent. The animal was sent by police to rescue station run by zoo Bojnice.

Today I was in touch with the head of bird's department, Ms. Grajciarova and was told that they don't keep Blue-throated barbet, only the Great barbet..I'll be visiting on Sunday so I'll post some news.
Now I am really interested which one they have. I only wrote for myself Slovak names of birds when I was there, but barbet was signed Barbet modrohrdlý (which is literary blue-throated barbet when translated).
