Bronx Zoo Bronx Zoo News 2025

Got an confirmation from a zoo email what will go into the former Amur leopard habitat:
“We are working on acclimating a clouded leopard to this exhibit. It is a slow process, and we do not yet know when the cat will be viewable to guests.”
I am very happy that this exhibit can finally have an animal that fits it.
Great news ! This was the original intent of that exhibit when it first opened 40+ years ago.
Clouded leopards are notoriously furtive so they will likely add a lot of foliage that they can behind behind so visitors should be patient and vigilant .
But it will be worth it.
A magnificent addition in any event that adds not just another species but a unique genus (Neofelis) to the collection . The first time a NYC zoo has exhibited the genus publicly since Staten Island house the genus over a decade ago are ago between the previous resident Ocelot and the current Fossa in their , former, intended,”Neo Tropical” cum, generic , “Tropical” wing

This term has been discussed before, it's Latin - "used to join two nouns, showing that a person or thing does two things or has two purposes. Cum is Latin for 'with.'" (Cambridge Dictionary)

For example, Madagascar! is an exhibit hall cum event space.
Perhaps I should have stated, “Orginally designed as an exhibit for Neo Tropical ( Meso American /South American continental species and now transitioned into any Neo equatorial species irrespective of zoogeographic (Ethiopian,Oriental, Oceanic , Neo Tropical) designation.
In other words anything from a “jungle”(Whatever that is today ) and to hell with Alfred Russell Wallace and zoogeography as a guideline to designing exhibits

Does anyone know the current whereabouts of their amur leopard? Has it been sent off already?
I do not know but if, in fact , they are replacing the species with a more zoo geographically appropriate Clouded leopard in Jungle World then , if they wish to maintain it “in situ” they could :
A. Exhibit in Wild Asia - though renovations would need to be done.
B. Exhibit it in one of the Snow leopard habitats
Or renovate the Red Panda exhibit.
C. Ship to Prospect Park where - for years - they were supposed exhibit a large cat (leopard) at some point -although plan seemingly has gone tbe way of the proposed, mythical jaguar exhibit at Queens zoo.
D Send it out to the non WCS affiliated Staten Island zoo - though still a NYC zoo- which already exhibits Amur leopard
E Maintain it - depending on its personality and disposition -as an,”Ambassador Animal” which , I assume, they had done with the Clouded leopard now, hopefully and rightly-proposed for exhibition at Jungle World.
Or, as you speculated , they have already sent the animal off to another AZA facility

The Red Panda exhibit would require far more than just a renovation if it's to house any large cat. And I don't even think it's large enough.
I was really only musing but, in any event, it would benefit by being outdoors and larger than the, literal, “cubicle “ it was held at in Jungle World.

Sorry if this has already been covered, but I was just looking at the map and noticed that there are no Rhinos shown on the Wild Asia monorail. Is this indeed the case?

I mentioned this a while ago, but the rhinos are very much present on the monorail - the map just doesn't show them for some reason.

Hi everyone!

New ZooChat member here. Finally decided to sign up after checking out the site for a while.

I want to point something out that I don’t think has been brought up about BZ yet. I last visited on June 13 this year (2025). While riding the monorail that day I learned that the Gaur are off exhibit at the moment because a new fence is being installed in their exhibit as we speak. This fence is cutting off the sloping rocky area you see after the tiger section from the forested/grassy area. No idea why this is being done or when the gaur will be back on exhibit. The monorail guide that day at least said the zoo will announce when the gaur are back on exhibit.

That is an odd thing for them to do, especially because the Gaur do tend to hang around that slope and it offers the closest views to the species. I would understand more if the zoo decided to segment the entire yard in two as the Gaur rarely wander to the first half of the space but cutting off one of the two view points is just bizarre. Will we stare at just a fence there now?

You can definitely see it when you pass the forested area (it’s very far away) and can barely see it when passing the sloping rock area. At least from what I recall. Presumably the forested area is still for the gaur, which is still plenty of space for them imo. Again they never said why this fence is being put there.

My imaginative hopeful brain is thinking they are going to introduce a new species just for this rocky area. Not sure what it could be. Is it too crazy to think the Amur leopard from JungleWorld would work here? Other than that maybe Takins? Just speculation.

Unless of course this is a similar situation to the fence in the Pere David’s Deer yard, where it seems like they closed off an area just to let the grass come in. Of course I still don’t know why that fence in the deer yard is still there.

I am planning to visit BZ again on July 18 this year to finally see the new World of Darkness and can provide an update on the gaur yard if I go on the monorail that day too.
