North American Masai Giraffe Population

(0.1) Masai giraffe Nicky passed away at San Diego Zoo in California on August 14th at age 28 (the oldest in human care) due to a rapid decline in health caused by old age.

It was also mentioned by the zoo that the male giraffe born in July was named Madoadoa (Swahili for spotty/frightened/blemish).

Such a long lived life, unless I’m mistaken I think Nicky was also the last living giraffe in the population born before 2000.

This is such a tough loss. I saw her on Wednesday last week, and then saw her personal ID sign removed on Friday... Does anyone know if Nicky has living offspring other than Chifu?

A male giraffe has been born at the LA zoo. A male giraffe also died at the LA zoo. I’m assuming Zainabu or Sofie gave birth to a male calf that died, as the alternative is Phillip has died and we’ve heard nothing of that.

Zainabu had a calf that didn't survive. During my recent visits, I've noticed that all 3 giraffes have not been on exhibit together. Sofie has been on exhibit with either Zainabu or Phillip.

@IndianRhino has 0.1 Domibella (Silver x Bahati) May 19th, 2015 of the San Diego Zoo passed away, I see she is excluded from your latest population list, or is she still there and it was just a minor error you made on the list?
