The big meerkat questions

Can anyone confirm that Combe Martin has the biggest meerkat enclosure, i just looked at the leaflet and thats what they claim. For the fattest meerkat award I think Paultons are the largest i have ever seen!

Maybe Gentle Lemur will post one of his excellent photos of the fattest ones he comes across.

On a side-note to meerkats, I've visited both London and Chester within the last 6 days and around the 4 meerkat enclosures between the parks, I heard enough of "compare the meerkat! ha ha!" to last a lifetime ;)

I understand this point of view. We could consider alternative species. Small-clawed otters and red river hogs spring to mind.

I'm all Madagascared out, every collection seems to have a Madagascar theme.

I sometimes wonder if the UK were to send all their Lemurs back to Madagascar, would they be endangered?

Off the top of my head, Exmoor, Dartmoor and IOW don't keep them.

I suspect it won't be long before Dartmoor end up with them...

Slightly off topic (in the sense of not being in the UK), but one of the largest meerkat exhibits I have seen is at Werribee in Australia. The exhibit runs the length of the cafe so that visitors can view (through a window) while having lunch.

Unfortunately most exhibits tend to be nothing more than sandpits with smooth block walls, featuring a fake termite mound. Few zoos seem to be able to replicate a good semi-arid savanna, with low bushes and dead trees over undulating terrain.

Tropiquaria has a poor meerkat enclosure. Its the worst I've ever seen. Its absolutely tiny and what looks like the air vent from the cafe comes out in it meaning the whole exhibit smells of chip fat. Id say the whole enclosure was roughly... seven metres across, five wide. But that may not be accurate because I'm going on memory.
You`ve not visited Eden Ostrich World then because if you had you wouldn`t say Tropiquaria was bad, also Noahs Ark ZooFarms isn`t far behind Edens in my book.

I work in a pet fish shop. The amount of times a day that I here, look theres dory, or nemo, or whatever. It drives you absolutely spare.

The shop gets treated like an aquarium. The amount of mothers with small children pointing out the fish that are 'just looking, thanks' when you go and ask them if they need any help.

Doesn't happen to be Romsey's World of Water by any chance? The amount of times I hear that sort of thing walking through there...:)

Do you mean as the award for most frequently exhibited- or 'the fattest' prize?. presumably the former as I haven't (yet) seen any fat Red River Hogs- though the otters can be a bit rolypoly.

Nope. And I do a 9 hour shift every Friday, and whilst I adore the job, I must hear a Finding Nemo character being shouted every... 20 minutes.

Aargh!

'Finding Nemo' is one of the banes of my life too. Most National Diploma Animal Care students arrive at my Aquatics lessons apparently believing that it represents the entire sum of human knowledge about fishes. If I had a hot dinner for every time I've had to say "It's just a cartoon!" I'd be far far fatter than I really am

It's not just 'Finding Nemo' or 'Comparethemeerkat' either. The Lion King, Jungle Book and the Cadbury's Gorilla often get mentioned/repeated at zoos

I've never heard of 'finding Nemo' bt then I'm not 'fishy'.

'Compare the Meeerkat' won't last thankfully- the great GB public seem to have short memories....;)

Though having said that its interesting to note in some zoos you still here the occassional 'oh look, Guy the Gorilla yeah'? uttered by younger people who probably never even saw him- fascinating that this phrase seems to have entered their subconcious.
