ZSL London Zoo ZSL London Zoo News 2025

Sounds like a very successful visit indeed!
I'm not sure if this has been confirmed, but I'm getting a nasty feeling that 'Meet the Neighbours' might be lost to the gorilla enclosure extension. All the species once kept there have moved out (Red-crested Turacos and Lilac-breasted Rollers to Bird Safari, Von der Decken's Hornbills to Blackburn Pavilion). I know the aviary wasn't too interesting design-wise, but using birds to decorate the visitor areas surrounding mammal exhibits for geographical theming is something I love.
Last I heard, it was meant to remain as an exhibit and receive some upgrades. I sort of presumed that the birds were moved just while work was going on, but given that has also slowed to a slumber I have a horrible feeling you might be right. Hopefully they are just doing preparation for modifying it, as you say it's a good approach and personally I do really quite like that aviary.

I'm over there tomorrow (thank you for saving me having to do a write up) and I'll try and ask about the aviary, warthogs etc

Kalaw .
On Tuesday the ostriches were just about visible in the back paddock , there has been a notice posted for a few weeks about them spending time off show and to look inside the house or catch a glimpse in the back paddock.
By the way I think there are actually 4 small Indian mongooses so whilst you done well to see 2 at a time there are 2 more.

Let’s hope you’re right. It would of course be even better if the aviary was closing only to reopen as an upgraded version.

Enjoy your visit. If you could ask about the number of sunbirds as well that would be appreciated. ;) Now that I think about it, I would be interested to know about the situation with the Splendids too, as they are no longer signed and though I could spot one last month I had no such luck today.

Shame about the ostriches being offshow, I wonder why. It means all three species are separated for the time being.

You’re quite right, there are four (2.2) per the stocklist. Checking now, this looks to have been the case since the species first came from Chester. It’s weird; I’ve always been completely convinced that there are only two and now that you mention it I couldn’t tell you where I got that from…

Some good news, some very bad news, and some news that is just sort of...news

Regarding the latter, according to social media the filming was for the new Harry Potter series. I've heard nothing to confirm that but apparently there's some videos on Twitter (apparently being the key word) of the cast and crew. Makes sense I suppose, especially with the level of secrecy and the fact they've all magically disappeared today

The bad...
The tamandua has died :( staff and volunteers seem very upset about it, understandably

The good...
I asked about the wild dogs - apparently they are arriving soon
The zoo are trying to work out how to make the capybaras permanent. I'm aware of this forum's general opinion of the public's favourite dopey rodent but I think that it can only be a net positive for London, every single school group I passed had kids shouting about them
The zebras and giraffes are apparently not separated due to fighting. Not denying they've been scrapping if there's footage, but the separation isn't directly because of that
New coatis are arriving soon
Male pygmy hippo will arrive once the capybaras move to Whipsnade (or at least at the time they're meant to)
Oni the female okapi is probably pregnant
A breeding male langur arrived at some point in recent weeks, so hopefully he'll get on better with the troop than the last one

Also, the baby gentle lemur is adorable

Also also, I haven't been able to ask about the sunbirds. I'm still here for another hour or so so I'll try and get an answer, but I counted 2 of each species

I don't think anybody could disagree this would be a smart idea for London. They don't have a lot of space for big the traditional crowd pleasers, so it would make sense for them to try and find permanent space for the capybara, who are very popular with the public. I'm baffled they never thought of this before.

Did they specify any reason as to why they were separated?

Grey/Hanuman Langur?

I'm not surprised they are trying to make the capybaras permanent. Like others said I think having them in the old anteater enclosure would work (especially if they bring back anteater too).

On topic of anteaters, shame about the tamandua, I've always had bad luck with this species being showy but on my one visit to London it was really active.

Grey/Hanuman Langur?
Indeed, apologies for not specifying originally.

@Cat-Man I can't seem to reply directly, but I completely agree. As does ZSL, apparently it's pretty much guaranteed they stay. The male pygmy hippo isn't expected until at least January from a keeper I spoke to today

Regarding the giraffe/zebra, no reason given. I asked about fighting specifically and they said it wasn't that. Also, Wilfred is meant to leave soon (they have been saying that for months, to be fair)

Personally if they keep the capybaras I'd love to see them mixed in the Rainforest walkthrough with a pool at ground level to fit with the South American theming in there, though I'm not sure there's space for it, would look amazing however.

Could always dig a pool and stick the capys in the squirrel monkey walkthrough. Sorry for not mentioning this earlier, I completely forgot, but I did learn the capybaras are actually there to give Amara some company! That's the main reason they didn't move straight to Whipsnade. From what I've gathered, it's quite possible - and looking likely - the capybara stay at London until the New Year when the hippo is meant to arrive. I would imagine they will construct them their own exhibit in the meantime. Where that leaves Whipsnade I have no idea, but given every other child from the endless school groups today had a plush capybara I'm hoping the endeavour will help fund the next unique addition to London. We shall see, but I can't lie - I really loved seeing them today.

Might give Whipsnade more time to complete the conversion to the former hippo space, which might have been a push before the summer holidays end anyway. Could turn out well for them to stay a while, or perhaps they will have more and the ZSL zoos can have some each! Have to say I also like them so look forward to seeing how the use the pools at Whipsnade. How will the water situation be for them at London?

Definitely, and if they decide to go ahead with a tapir mix then it would probably allow them to add both species at the same time with a fully specialised exhibit. I suppose it depends where they end up being moved to in London - currently the hippo paddock is the only suitable spot, and even then it's a tad too deep really. I think I've said this a few times recently but it genuinely feels like there's a real sense of optimism in ZSL when it comes to both sites currently. Even despite the deaths and the hippocalypse, the wheels are turning on exhibit updates and new examples of existing species, while also the management is being very open minded and in many ways rather exciting in their ideas. I'm still holding out hope for a pangolin in the Clore at some point in the near future. I genuinely think it's more likely than not

There is no indoor viewing of the capybarra at London so little benefit in prolonging their stay into the colder months in their present enclosure so logically move them to Whipsnade or allocate a different enclosure.

Thanks for all the updates. Harry Potter was my first guess too but I couldn't think what they would be filming other than the reptile house scene, and SLoRA wasn't sectioned off at any stage of the day.

Devastated to hear about the tamandua, always a favourite of mine and a significant individual being one of the very few subspecies-pure tamanduas in Europe. Hopefully the zoo continues with the species in the future.

I'm actually quite glad to hear that they want capybaras at London as well. I do like the species quite a bit (I just don't think they're quite exciting enough to replace Common Hippos ;)) and their popularity among visitors will most certainly help the zoo in the long term. Fascinating to hear that they're keeping Amara company, especially seeing as they don't actually share the same space, rather are just neighbours.

Good news about the langurs and amazing news about the okapis, if it isn't a false alarm of course. Also nice to hear that you could spot both Splendid Sunbird females.

Zsl have said the capys will move to whipsnade at the end of the summer so they would have to backtrack on that, however as of last week no work had started on the old hippo enclosure at whipsnade, they haven't even cleaned the pools yet!

I can't profess to be an expert on the series, given my last (and only) read of the book was well over a decade ago, but apparently they were filming quite a lot across the entire zoo - obviously you'd know better than me! I'd assumed maybe they used the outside of the old reptile house as a facade, but I do think it's quite nice the zoo will seem to play a slightly bigger role in this series than the film. As for the sunbirds, I must have been very lucky because they were very active indeed! Also, the new parrot you mentioned is very pretty indeed - I do find it funny how he perches with the other 2 macaws, but about a foot away hahaha

I'm shocked they haven't even started, regardless as to whether they move in the summer or not. I suppose it's quite a big job but still, I definitely wouldn't want that exhibit empty for long if I was in charge!

Ended up with a few spare hours around midday so popped in again, news from today (this time with helpful bullet points)...

•Both remaining meerkats have been PTS due to age
•The female sloth isn't in Rainforest Life. Not sure where she is, but she wasn't there yesterday either. Maybe the vets?

Oh and I've now seen 3/4 small Indian mongooses - the newish fencing I think definitely helps, along with turning up when the keepers have just fed them
