San Diego Zoo San Diego Zoo News 2025

Just found out that Red Ruffed Lemurs are currently in place of the De Brazza's Monkeys on Monkey Trails, does anyone know what happened to the De Brazza's Monkeys? I wonder if they still have them since they recently had a baby? Also, why even have Red Ruffed Lemurs where the De Brazza’s Monkeys are when they already have an exhibit for them in the Madagascar portion of Africa Rocks?

I hope the Debrazzas can return to Monkey Trails soon. They were my mom's favorite when we went this past June, she said she liked them more than the Colobus monkeys.

Don’t worry, San Diego still has them and they’re probably temporary off exhibit and will probably return sometime sooner or later

Mentioned in that news thread, 1.1 Western Lowland Gorillas Paul Donn and Jessica have been moved to the Safari Park. This leaves the zoo with 3.0 gorillas (two full-brothers and their half-brother) in a bachelor troop.
I wonder if the San Diego Zoo will be getting new female gorillas for the exhibit?

Ive heard this is temporary and the De Brazzas Monkeys will return shortly.
With the Zoo having multiple groups of animals they will move them around at times! Just like there are 2 areas to see Vervet Monkeys or Languars!

The last black crested mangabey has passed away.
Not surprised but a shame to hear. I know it was discussed a few pages back that San Diego looks to be phasing out the species. Do we know what will happen to their enclosure?

Does San Diego still have any major primate rarities with the loss of their Lion-taled macaques and Black crested mangabey? I know Gelada, spot-nosed guenon if those count, am I missing any?

I remember someone on here mentioned Vervets would be moving into that enclosure eventually.
There is still the troop of Angolan colobus in the exhibit that also held the last black crested mangabeys, which is the old lion-tailed macaque exhibit in Sun Bear Forest. The old black crested mangabey exhibit across from the bonobos that is being referenced by @Jambo has, indeed, held the Zoo's second South African vervet troop for quite awhile now. This move occurred after the Zoo's last breeding age black-crested mangabeys were moved out to other institutions.

Silvery Luntungs and Allen's Swamp Monkeys I believe
I think that depends on your definition of "major rarity". If we look at primates with 10 or less holders, they house blue-eyed black lemur, bonobo, gelada, lesser spot-nosed guenon, silvery langur, South African vervet, and Wolf's mona monkey.

@RJB Wildlife has posted another video providing further updates on the current state of the zoo.

Parking changes will not include the zoo car park, at least for the meantime. This is because the zoo leases the carpark and is currently in the process of re-negotiating the lease. However, paid parking will be implemented around the rest of Balboa park, starting October 1st.

Spinless Marvel updates:
  • Goliath Stick Insects have been removed from display.
  • Giant Asian Toads are now in the former Coconut Crab exhibit.
Wildlife Explorers Basecamp Updates:
  • Kola the Red Panda who was on display in the Wildlife Explorers Basecamp has sadly passed away. A binturong is now on exhibit where he previously was.
  • A baby Squirrel Monkey has been born.
Reptile Walk updates:
  • Many Horned Adder and Red Spitting Cobra have been added to the Reptile House.
Lost Forest Update:
  • The Red Ruffed Lemurs who have been moved on display in Monkey Trails are a separate breeding pair from the main group in Africa Rocks.
Northern Frontier Update:
  • Polar Bear renovation will begin following this October.
  • Two pregnant female Bonteboks have been moved on display.
Asian Passage Updates:
  • The Sloth Bear cubs plus mum now also have access to the next door enclosure that used to house Andean Bear.
  • The former Aye Aye cages have also now been replaced by a little garden.

Does the polar bear renovations include bringing new polar bears to the zoo within a few years or are they planning to wait for their current three senior bears to pass?

Given that Tatqiq and Kalluk potentially have several years ahead of them yet, I would expect they're not looking too actively for the time being. I haven't seen anything implying any of their three bears is doing poorly. It's very much possible the exhibit isn't empty for as far out as another decade. As it is my understanding was the renovations were more along the lines of upgrading equipment and some facelifting rather than an overhaul - the bears do not appear to be leaving so nothing too major can happen.

Kind of sad that the zoo's last Red Panda passed away, now the zoo as of right now is Red Panda-less, hopefully they’ll get Red Pandas again sooner or later probably once the Asian Passage renovation is finished and they can have them by the Giant Pandas.

Hope the San Diego Zoo doesn’t phase out the Andean Bears like they’re doing with the Sun Bears. Maybe they can relocate the Andean Bears to Elephant Odyssey to represent the Short-Faced Bears and they can move the Grizzly Bears to the Polar Plunge area and build a new exhibit for them if they phase out the Bear Grottoes.

The Zoo is not without red pandas. 0.1 "Adira" is still at the Zoo and living in the exhibit across from the first giant panda exhibit in Panda Ridge.

I would be surprised if the Zoo ends up maintaining all five non-phase-out bear species long-term. There just really is not enough space to maintain proper exhibits for all of them. They seem very committed to giant pandas, polar bears, and sloth bears, but I could see the fate of the Andean and grizzly bears being up in the air looking ahead. Bear Canyon and Urban Jungle are pretty much set to be the next major renovations at the Zoo, but I think that, especially, with a new CEO coming in eventually, a lot of what the future of the Zoo will look like will be up in the air. I wouldn't be surprised to see some shake ups of other areas, too.
