Yorkshire Wildlife Park Yorkshire Wildlife Park News 2025

Rescues from war zones aren’t going to be more cost-effective than acquiring animals from established collections in countries like France or Germany.

This is just NOT true.
The media will cover 'rescues' and the public will donate to them in large amounts.
Neither will do so in anywhere near the same way, if at all, for standard 'conservation' based zoo-to-zoo moves.
It may be even that airlines or carriers will contribute to a 'rescue' flight/move too, whereas both charge a huge premium for conservation moves.
Hence the fondness for 'rescues' over true conservation-breeding moves. Just look at the bear enclosures and additions in the UK done over the past few years. All except one with zero conservation benefit.

We're all aware that "rescuing"(or as I've been corrected in other posts "rehoming") is great media attention and can result in higher visitor numbers.

Not everyone on here agrees with it(and that's fair enough) but it can be a huge plus to the said collection

The three lion cubs are now outside in a small fenced off section of the paddock, the plan is to gradually expand this section as they gain more confidence, though further cubproofing is still required. Staff haven't announced their names yet, but said it shouldn't be much longer.

The new lion cubs have been named - Jabari, Felix and Nala, 2boys and one girl.

On July 1st, the zoo announced that another gelada monkey was born. The zoo also announced they sexed the first gelada as (1.0) and named it Tekeze.

Speaking of new arrivals two male painted dogs arrrived recently does anyone know where they came from or anything about them?

Hello!
Does anyone know much about the current giant otter population?
We did a feed in July 2021 and they had mum and dad Alexandra and Orimar and a pup Bonnita. I can't remember if Alex was the male or Ori tbh!!
Then maybe early 2023 I think they had a big litter, then early 2024 one Mateo that died. Then I think a big litter after that as we went late 2024 and must have been 10 of them ish!
Now I've seen on yorkshire zoo fb fans that Alexandra has been moved to Jersey zoo with a one called Fia? What happened to Ori?
Who's still left at Yorkshire?
Thanks!

Aw brilliant thank you!!
I guess they've produced a few too many pups hence the move. Shame to split the family up though.

ImPAWtant Update

Our adorable Amur Leopard, Auckley will soon be leaving Yorkshire Wildlife Park to start an exciting new chapter and help protect the survival of her species.

Amur Leopards are listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species with around 120 individual remaining in the wild. As the only surviving Amur Leopard cub born in Europe in 2023, Auckley is incredibly special.

She will be moving to another collection to play her role in ensuring the future of her species. But don’t worry, you still have some time left to see her.

We regularly rotate our five Amur Leopards around Leopard Heights so visitors have the chance to see them all. This Sunday, Auckley will be in the main reserve!

The best times to spot her are during the Leopard and Tiger Talk at 10:30am and the Leopard Carnivore Feed at 2:30pm on Sunday.

While we will miss her, we know she is going to have a great life in her new home!

Lion Rescue 3 Update

Thanks to your incredibly generosity, we have reached our fundraising target for Lion Rescue 3.

This means that Oleg, Rafael, and Shanti will soon begin their journey to a safe, secure, and loving home here in the UK at Yorkshire Wildlife Park.

At just a year old these three Lion cubs have already faced tough beginnings - born into uncertainty and caught in circumstances beyond their control in war-torn Ukraine. But now, thanks to your support and our partnership with the WildLife Foundation, their future is filled with hope.

Preparations are already well underway to bring them to safety, and it’s all possible because of you. Thank you to each everyone of you who donated, we couldn’t do what we do without you

The park has announced the arrival of new female Spotted hyena Noubia from Pairi Daiza in Belgium, with the intention of breeding with male Speedy.

Is Grenada still at YWP? She would have turned 14 years old in July.

I know that Maverick left the collection earlier this year on the recommendation of the breeding programme.

Oleg, Rafael and Shanti have arrived

The 3 Lion cubs arrived this morning and are currently settling in to their new home in Lion County after travelling over 1,700 miles from Kyiv

This rescue wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible fundraising efforts from our charity partners, the WildLife Foundation and the generosity of everyone who donated to the Lion Rescue 3 campaign.

We’d also like to say a special thank you to the dedicated team at Wild Animals Rescue Center for looking after the cubs and also a huge shoutout to Crossborder Animal Services for bringing them home to safety
