Also, its a shame you couldnt get a good view of the valley. To be honest, I think whilst the valley is a nice size and very naturally pleasing, its not all that great for the visitor. Unless im mistaken have we only got the barrier next to the cafe from which to view the animals?

Good news about the tapirs, can't wait to check them out on Sunday. I'll try and get a few snaps of the valley too. Good job my camera has good zoom ;)
 
The male Marabou Stork. ;)

There's only one viewing point by Cafe Graze, yeah. In the future they plan a second viewing area near Heart of Africa and a safari truck tour may well happen according to my email.

Note the tapirs are currently confined to the hardstanding and their indoor pool is blocked off, but you may well be lucky to get in good view. :)
 
yes it was a real shame that the valley was closed of yesterday i was hopeing to get to see the waterbuck and zebra's and nearly every time i walked past that area the Addax was inside so could not even see them apart from one lone one where the old Arabian Oryx was. lots of animals having fun today tho the Bongos where running around after each other and so was two Somali wild asses also Grevy's Zebra in the large paddock where having fun (maiting) babies on the way i guess
 
Oooh exciting. Any idea how far gone? Or if she is only 'believed' does this mean she wont be far? Are the pair a male and female then? =D
 
New bits from todays visit:

Nothing on the island in the tropical house yet.
Amphibian Centre still looking a bit... incomplete. Are we sure its going to be open by Easter, ie next weekend?
Lots of wallaby joeys popping out of their mums pouches
Giraffe information sign put up at the valley. No sign of any in there though.
Valley looking magnificent, lots of space for the animals. Nothing was close however, the ostriches were as far as they could get.
Isabella the Giraffe is in the early days of pregnancy =D
Still only four frilled lizards on show. Any news on the fifth?
Tapirs had access to their paddock, and look really good.

Everything (including giraffes :)) were out in their paddocks today. With the sun shining and everything out and about it made a really great day. Took 346 pictures. Haha
 
Can anyone tell me what the story is on the giraffes at Marwell ZOO?
They have had hybrids for years, but recently management has set up its first pair of Rothschildt's ... What is the future plan for giraffes (both hybrid and pure-bred)?
 
Hybrids will spend the day in the valley and return to the giraffe house each night. The pure rothschilds will remain in the paddock as far as Ive been told. :)

And does anyone know their names and ages? I was pleased to see them exploring their paddock today.

Also, it was pointed out to me that one of the red pandas has what looks like a hairless tail, as if it has had the hair shaved on it. Does anyone know about this? Is this the male or the female, and what are their names? The other one was running around the enclosure, whilst this one was in the tree.

Finally, one of the ocelots had a very low-hung stomach as if she was pregnant. Are there ocelot kittens on the way? I hope so :D
 
The red pandas tail has been like that for several weeks now. In fact, since I got my annual pass so... mid February? Don't know anything more than that I'm afraid. Have the red pandas by the Snow Leopards been moved? I've not seen them there recently and they're not listed on the map anymore...
 
That enclosures been empty for donkey's years now, despite the recent renovations.
 
Lol, well Ive only just started going frequently. The last time before the last say... nine Sundays was Feb 2008. And I was only there for half a day haha

The Red Pandas were definately there then! xD
So how come they were moved?

Is the panda a new arrival? As the hairless tail could be stress related I know chester's male(?) had a hairless tail for a period after his arrival.
 
I believe the panda did arrive relativley recentley, so yes, that could be the answer.
 
19th April 2009:

Not too much to report...

- Wacker and Marmaduke are out of the yard near the red pandas and are back in the Prezwalski Horse paddock.
- More baby capybaras.
- Twin Golden Headed Lion Tamarins have been born.
- Still no giraffe in the valley, though it was said they won't go in till after several weeks from opening.
- Two Nyala have gone to Newquay.
