Axe Valley Wildlife Park Axe Valley Wildlife Park

Yesterday was a strange day, a bit like attending an old friends funeral!
Was good to see @TNT and @FBBird again and meet up with @gulogulogulo for the first time.

I only visited Axe Valley for the first time in 2020, but have visited every year since and am gutted it has gone.

Despite some of its enclosures being a bit basic, it's collection will live long in the memory, particularly its carnivores, 21 species at date of closure

By my reckoning this phenomenal number is only currently beaten by 3 UK collections! It is a number that puts most major UK collections to shame - more than both ZSL collections combined for a start!

Chester/Wingham 19
Dudley 17
Howletts16
Colchester/Yorkshire 15
Edinburgh 12
Cotswold 11
Marwell/Whipsnade 10
Paignton 9
London 8

The 3 that beat Axe - Exmoor 30+, Hamerton 25, Five Sisters 22. (ZTL suggests Port Lympne may also have more but don't think some are up to date)There may be others, but I think all this shows Axe Valley is a collection which will be sadly missed in the uk.
So glad I made the 8 hour round trip to be there.
