  • The Anti-Captivity Lobby – Suggestions For A Counterattack (Clinton H Keeling) - opinion piece providing the author's views on how British zoological collections should combat a rise in anti-zoo sentiment within the media and the establishment of multiple organisations devoted to this cause.
  • ACOPAZOO And The Status Of Zoos In Colombia (Teresa Gutierrez de White) - article discussing the Association of Colombian Zoological Parks and its members, with particular focus on the Zoologico de Cali, along with thoughts on how Latin American zoological collections can improve and develop; the article is accompanied by several tables pertaining to Zoologico de Cali showing visitor numbers, sources of income and annual budget, average temperature range within the area, the number of animals donated to the zoo between 1985 and 1989, and survival rates for confiscated or donated animals.

  • The Modern Zoo: Ark Or Showboat (Stefan Ormrod) - a detailed and in-depth opinion piece submitted by a former keeper at Jersey Zoo and latterly an inspector of Eastern European collections, arguing that the recently-published World Zoo Conservation Strategy presents an over-optimistic picture of the value which zoological collections have within serious conservation programmes, that the ratio of bad zoological collections to good zoological collections is significantly more weighted towards the former than the Strategy suggests, that zoological collections in general are still places of mindless entertainment which only started to claim interest in conservation in order to defend themselves from the anti-zoo lobby, and that if they truly wish to improve they need to cooperate more with organisations such as the Born Free Foundation.

It is, I think, worth specifically highlighting this article located within the most recent batch of IZN issued indexed - as noted, it represents the first submission I have reached from @vogelcommando , although I believe at least one earlier submission took place within a 1980s edition I lack!

Would you be able to show this part - "a 5-year development plan for Orana Park Wildlife Trust, New Zealand".

Back then (well, a bit later in the early 80s) Orana had a huge signboard up showing a map of their development plan which included a big North American section with (from memory) bison, wolves, otters, beavers, and I think moose. I always wish I had been able to take a photo of that, but I didn't have a camera then and when I did get a camera it was a little dodgy thing because real cameras were super expensive. I don't expect the magazine will show any images of plans but it would be interesting to see what it says.

As a general thread update, after having a little break, I've started adding new entries for a batch of 1960s and 1970s editions which recently came into my possession - after which point I will pick things back up with the 1995 writeups :)

first of all, I really appreciate this work considering my current situation.

I'm looking for an article in an issue of IZN and have no luck anywhere else. The citation I have is:
Yajima, M (1996) : The development of insectariums and their future. Int Zoo News 43, 484-491.
that does make it seem like it came from a collected volume of all the issues from 1996, so it might be a big ask to request either photos or a scan. But I'm at the end of my rope in my quest.

thank you again! what a shame this seems like archival issues of IZN are so difficult to access when it's such an interesting case.

Hi Dave! Incredible that you're doing this, given how hard it is to find archives of International Zoo news. I'm currently working on a review, and was wondering if you had a physical copy of the 1999, Volume 46/Issue 5 magazine? I'm specifically looking for an article about zebra sharks at the Henry Doorly Zoo if there's a way you could scan that in for me.

Do you know if there has ever been an article about zebra and/or Jentink duikers in IZN? (Or duikers in captivity in general.) And if so, which issue was it?

I'd be very much surprised if there wasn't an article or news item on the subject at some point or other!

However, I don't have the "off-the-top-of-my-head" knowledge of the IZN back catalogue to immediately think of a particular edition :p:D I'll have a look through my collection to see what I can find.
