Bristol Zoo (Closed) Big animals

I don't mind the lion enclosure as it is, but split in two it would be TINY for both the Lions and proposed Tigers.

even though i would love to see tigers back, splitting the cage in half is a dumb typical 10 yr olds idea but i would much rather see when moti dies them give the male to somewhere else and get tigers in the lions enclosure and i would like them to be white because bristol was famous for its white tigers.

Nice for the public, but a nightmare for captive breeding. Whites tend to be avoided nowadays.

Wow, and that's, what, your 7th post? Nice lol.
But seriously, I see where cat-man coming from. A new big cat species would do them good, but there's just nowhere for them. Unless they mow down the current lion enclosure and use up part of the lawn to construct two new enclosure for, say, two leopard species. I think they'll just stick with the lions though.
Edit: I think Bristol could do the honourable thing and take on a white tiger, and give some real education about why they're white and the fact that they're about as pure a subspecies as a domestic cat. I highly doubt they would even consider white tigers though, I'd think much less of them if they did.

Unfortunately, the only place I've seen this done with any degree of success is the IOW, and, as we know, very few people bother to read the interpretation - as such, it could very easily send out the wrong message.

If the zoo were to take on tigers again (bit silly as they've already got a rare big cat species), they'd do better taking on a rare (smaller?) subspecies, like Sumatran, Indo-Chinese or Malayan.

However, don't tigers theoretically need more space than Asiatic lions (they'd need a pool for a start)

a im 11 and b, i said not to breed them, but to hold them while other places breed them!, and i know most tigers in the uk are hybrid

Cat-man. Your suggestions are perfectly valid but I don't think Bristol will ever keep White Tigers again. They are a serious 'conservation' minded zoo/ organisation and non-purebred cats don't come into that role, so no, I don't think it would happen. Also, the Lion enclosure is a decent size now- splitting it in two would invite criticism about 'too small' enclosures again...

I wouldn't mind seeing a comletely new enclosure built somewhere else in the zoo for Sumatran tigers but that's more likely to be at the new 'Wildlife Centre' if it happens.

I think they will just keep the existing Lions and replace each of the pair as they die.

thanks, i understand a bit better now, but ive always seen the lion enclosure as quite large, but judging on the zoo uk

The TV is deceiving I thought that until I visited myself, don't get me wrong its a decent size enclosure and a good one but from the show "The Zoo UK" I thought it was bigger.

it is quite a decent size now, but that is because its been enlarged several times. Originally the site it is on had five very much smaller cages for big cats(there was still at least one white tiger then) and they were really pretty small cages. There are picures of one of them in the Bristol section of the gallery. Gradually they got rid of all the other cats and extended the 'cages' together and then outwards too, in order to make the one decent sized enclosure that the Lions have today.

Yes thats right i remember now they call that section the lion house and as i was a child i would get confused since it was not a house and as well as lions they had tigers leopards white tigers and i think at one point snow leopards.

And if they buld the new zoo its planned to have a section called the sumatran rainforest and will have sumatran tigers.

Hi all, not going to put my comments on here too much on this one as bristol is "my" zoo having worked there nearly 15 years and I'd go on all night lol. Not even gonna get started on the white tiger idea!! But just to let you know Moti is actually 16 this year, as is our male Kamal.

old map from 1977 says there was proposed tiger enclosure behind aquariumm(could This be done)

I think there's offices or something behind there, could be wrong though. I heard that "Monkey temple" was going to be adapted to house tigers at some point too, how i don't know though.

There was temporary big cat housing in the area behind the aquarium for a while, but no it won't be done again. This was just whilst the new cat enclosures was being built I believe.

Oh and ashley-h, were did you hear tigers would be housed in the monkey temple??!!!!
