Chester Zoo Sibu

why with chester it could get scrapped altogether? finance, new plans?

The plans seem to change a lot the "natural vision" master plan is believed to have change since it was annouced late last year.

It was a Keeper who told me the old male (who I presume was Sibu) had died in his sleep after an operation as he returned from another zoo in poor health and hadn't been well for a few months with issues including abscesses in his mouth which lead to his operation of removing all his teeth.

Here's the original statement indicating that 'Sibu' is dead. Maybe someone connected with Chester can confirm if it is correct and the current situation with the Bornean Orangutans?

Sibu died in October, the keeper Andii spoke to was obviously better informed than the one I spoke to. They still have Tuan and the four females.

Good news that is not Tuan (breeding reasons), any information on why they have no pregnant orangs?

Ahh at last, it has been confirmed - I was beginning to doubt my doubt that I had heard correct! The whole issue has seemed a bit concealed from Chester Zoo which makes the circumstances surrounding his death a bit suspicious. Perhaps there are legal issues with the other zoo if his problems were through neglect?

I think he came from Apenheul, and I can`t possibly imagine that he died from neglect.

I don't think it is anything sinister that no statement about Sibu has ciome from Chester. They do not often announce animal deaths.

Nor do I. I think it was a case of misinformation being handed out rather than any form of 'cover up.'

the only thing that puzzles me is how he could have returned from Apenheul in anything but tiptop condition. Still, its in the past now. RIP Sibu- a problem animal.

I was just referring to the Keeper inferring that he didn't really settle in or was liked by staff and the info that he gave re him coming back with 'several health problems' including a mouth full of abscesses which resulted in him having an op to remove all his teeth, after which he later died in his sleep.

When this particular thread 1st started, I emailed Chester asking them to confirm which orangs they held, and if Sibu had died.

I received a reply from someone called Kate Brankin dated 7 May (but didn't read my mail until yesterday):

Thank you for your email enquiry which has been passed to me. Here is the information you requested:

Yes, unfortunately Sibu is no longer alive and died in October last year.

Hope this information is useful to you and thank you for your interest in Chester Zoo.

Interestingly, there is no mention of the Bornean Donna ?

(also, there has since been a baby Bornean of course .....)

And I'd always assumed Tuan was pronounced Too - an ?

I know ISIS is not all ways correct but it list Chester as 1.4. (no mention of the birth yet.)

Just read that again, October last year! Its taken a while to come out then.

The zoo website on the Realm of the Red Ape page lists Tuan, Martha, Sarikei and Leia, and mentions the arrival of Donna in February 2009. So 1.4 appears to be correct (plus one young)
