''but if every zoo that keeps big cats went about doing things like Zion Wildlife Gardens we would have a new serious incident every week.''
I agree with what you've said here. Obviously if every zoo handraised every predatory animal born in the zoo, you would probably get a lot of accidents too often, whether serious or minor. However i also agree with what ptig has said, handraising can also have incredible benefits & one of the examples i can give you where hand rearing has been a success is at the feline conservation center.
There are separate issues here. The quote of mine that you took above was not about handraising tiger cubs, it was about the free handling of adult tigers/entering the cages when the adults tigers are still in them as done by Zion Wildlife Gardens, which now tragically (but predictably) has resulted in the death of a person. Please be careful about the usage of other peoples quotes out of their context. Secondly, just to avoid possible misunderstandings, I never did say that handrearing never is succesful or doesn't have any benefits. It certainly does, but what was asked about earlier were the potential healt issues, not the potential benefits (posts 34 and 37). However, I will maintain that it should be avoided if possible. At least until someone provides reference(s) supporting certain claims, as I requested in post 39.
