Twycross Zoo Twycross zoo

Fair Point

Although Twycross is by no means perfect it is not the WORST zoo in the U.K by along way, before you go slandering the zoo i suggest you visit a few of the other zoos in the U.K and you will see that Twycross as actually alot better than you think.Just for the Record i have visited over 250 collections in the U.K and over 50 in Europe and have seen some awfull collections amongst that lot but then you called think what i thought was crap you may think is the best place you`ve ever visited.
Also i suggest you learn to count as Twycross only have 2 female Lions but that will change when the new enclosure is built over the back of the Elephants paddock, and just a question for you which zoo holds the stud-book for Asian Lions??????

A good point well made.

Whilst Twycross may be frustrating and under-achieving in the eyes of experienced zoo-goers it would be unfair to call it a bad zoo.

But don't those very points, coupled with the knowledge it is a wealthy organisation that will not spend sufficient money on necessary upgrades of the Primate enclosures and therefore appears caught in some sort of time- warp, justify calling it a bad zoo?

No, though this may appear like splitting hairs, I'd say that makes it a badly administered/planned zoo.

A bad zoo, to me, is one where the animals themselves are in poor condition and a large number of enclosures are inadequate (though I concede Twycross has a few that are inadequate (Lion enclosure, old Chimp "death row" enclosures) and a number that are merely/barely adequate).

I'd echo Zoogiraffe's comment that there are a number of far worse zoos in the UK and whilst Twycross is probably not currently a Premier League zoo it's not in division 3 either. Zoo's analogised to football teams, there's thread potential in that.

Trust me, I'm no apologist for Twycross, I find myself getting frustrated and criticising decisions made and unused/wasted potential every time I visit, but overall I don't think it's a bad zoo.

I'll agree that animals at Twycross are all well fed and well cared for and overall in good condition and that the enclosures and grounds are normally clean and in a good state of repair etc. It is just a case of the more you know about their administration and management/husbandry techniques( or rather the lack of them in some instances!!!!) the worse it seems.

The weird thing is that collection-wise it SHOULD be in the Premier League but because of the obvious flaws it somehow doesn't make the grade for me.

Absolutely, I can agree completely with that sentiment.

i've not long just gotten back from twycross, not an ideal day to go due to the weather, there didn't seem to be many keepers around and theres not that many feeds or talks happening during the day either, i would have liked to have a talk about the leopards personally.

My impressions:

1/ one of the giraffes was licking the wall and there was a big orange stain, it was also licking one of the metal poles in the outside enclosure as well.

2/ the amur leopard enclosure: i think i had the most problems with this enclosure out of all of them, the outside part is lovely, it gives the animal enough places to hide, and from what i observed it felt the need to do this, the animal seemed uncomfortable when the general public was around so we moved swiftly on so as to give the animal some space, the inside closures i wasn't so chuffed about, one of them was just about adequate however i didn't feel that the cat should have been lying on the bare floor, the other one was half the size of the first one and also held a leopard, there may be a reason for this however there was no keeper there to ask.

3/ keepers were thin on the ground, we met some in the small primate houses and by the elephants but that was about it.

4/ The lion enclosure needed to be cleared out lots of bones everywhere, however the two beautiful lionesses didn't seem to mind, so why should i?

5/ the male sealion was basically moving his head around and that was it, he's a very big boy :)

6/ the orangs all looked quite bored, and in one of the houses an orang was sitting with its face pressed against the window and some stupid woman shoved a flash and camera in her face, needless to say i wanted to take her camera off her and shove it where the sun doesn't shine.

7/ The chimps mostly stayed inside, however one of the chimps was showing off for visitors by twirling on a fire hose, and loving it :D

8/ the bonabo's were amazing i haven't seen any before they were mostly inside but one of the more active groups we saw today, one of them was building a den out of the crates :)

9/ most of the gorillas were inside and mostly sleeping, however one had braved the rain and was sat close to the glass poking its tongue out.

10/ a scottish wildcat was soaking wet and asleep in the rain.

11/ There was a block of cages which held chimps including the one with alopecia, i wasn't too impressed with those especially when i saw the new chimp house, they seem to be all on one level and most of the chimps were lying down on the floor, the keeper explained that they were old chimps, and they were trying to form groups of chimps.

12/ All in all we had a good day and apart from the few negatives i mentioned things seemed okay there, there is obviously a lot of work being done, extensions to the elephant enclosure etc etc, and i would love to know why they have a lone male sealion, are they trying to phase them out?

i have pics but need to set up my camera on the laptop, and some of them arent very good as they were taken inside

13/ p.s they have the environment thingy where they talk about recycling etc, they had real furs there, i nearly bawled my eyes out but they had some really good stuff on orangs and bonabo's. they also had an over 15 closed off area which had disturbing images.

Hmmm...they did have pair?

I had a look but only saw the male, i don't quite understand whether they have an indoor part for them or if they stay in the pool the whole time, but there definatly was only the male, and as mentioned no keeper around, we missed the feeding times

They should have a female will have a look when i go later today,if they only have a male i will find out whats happened to the female.

Hi, I am a member at Twycross Zoo so do go there reguarly. I went on Thursday and there were difinatly two sealions. Ill have a look when I go next. Theres normally the huge male and a smaller sealion too. I dont agree about how poor some of you say the enclosures are, esepically the amur leopards. The one area which i feel Twycross falls down on is the chimpanzee enclosures, and that in many of the ape enclosures there should be more foliage etc.

if they sorted out the inside enclosure for the leopards it would be fine, as i said in my post i quite liked the outdoor one

Yeah the inside is crap as it just a wooden bench and stone floor for each leopard. However what most people don't know is that on the right hand side of the cage in the right holding pen there is an outside/private part for them to go out of public view.

Twycross seem to be working hard at the moment to improve the zoo with the new open air lion enclosure and Dhole enclosure currently being built next to the elephant enclosure and the arrival of some snow leopard near to the entrance. If only they'd do something with the chimp enclosures, like all of them lol

I haven't seen the holding pen, maybe my questions may have been answered if there had been a keeper around, which as i mentioned in my observations were thin on the ground, what i didn't understand was the fact that the cage on the left which held one of the leopards was half the size of of the cage that held the other one, and there didn't seem to be a way of getting between the two. i was with a friend and she was very distressed about this and was close to tears.

There is a sytem where they rotate them around so the same leopard is not always in the smaller cage. The leopard which is out side is normally in the left hand cage and the one thats in has the ight hand side but is not normally in their as it is normally in the private outside part.

Anyone know of any major plans for the zoo over this year apart from the welcome center and lion enclosure. Anyone have any ideas whats going to happen to the dhole and lion enclosures, and is there going to be anymore new animal arrivals?
