@ Tiffanyanddave I also thaught the snow leopard litter of 2007 left a while ago. I also thaught that Ungulate mentioned they were shipped out already. I wonder where they are keeping these cats. On ISIS it mentions that we have 8 total!

@ Tapir26 Yes, the south side of the African Rainforest Pavilion is where the mandrills are. The reno is supposed to include; pygmy hippos, mandrills, red river hogs, and the lake Malawi tank also with the addition of a few reptile exhibits!
The river hippos may also be apart of the elephant construction, they may move the hippos or just expand the elephant exhibit around the current hippo exhibit.

Its saddens me to think that Toronto Zoo would sink to the level of sending an animal to Magnetic Hill Zoo (How can we forget the baboons freezing to death?)

The other male surplus mandrill is named Mbuti and as far as I know, he spends his summer/spring/fall in the old outdoor babbon enclosure

As for the snow leopard cubs, it shocks me that Toronto Zoo can hold 6 snow leopards in that facility (It depends on the holding area though)

Also, I think the zoo should send Tanuck out to another zoo so he can be used to his full breeding potential. The zoo could then use the whole Indian Rhino Complex for the rhino's and they'd have massive space

The Magnetic Hill zoo has come a long way from the baboon incident, I actually heard they fired the keeper who forgot about them. And to be honest the zoo is fairly nice.

The snow leopards may be housed somewhere else aswell. Like the cheetahs they have 2 seperate holding buildings.

Would the zoo be able to put a rhino in Tanuks exhibit? I guess maybe for another holding area?

I never realized the snow leopards had two holding buildings? The other one must be located behind the other one

I think if the zoo was going to give all of the space to the rhinos, they'd probably use both indoor rooms and holding areas but they'd need probably just use the otudoor area as another outdoor holding (It would still give them more room and enough space to acquire another rhino

Im not sure if the snow leopards actually have two holding buildings. I was just simply comparing them to the cheetahs and thaught that they might.

I would love if the zoo aquired another rhino, I really think they should slap up a fence (cause there is quite a bit of space behind the rhino house) to expand the tapir exhibit.

Kota is kept in the outdoor clouded leopard holding when there are snow leopard cubs. This area is not accessible to zoo visitors and is behind the Malayan building that has the butterflies and clouded leopards, quite far back into the woods. And I believe he said the 2007 cubs were being kept in the medical area, but I could be wrong on that.

Thnak you for the info, now we know how this is all taken care of

Juts a question, does anyone know what this outdoor holding area looks like and how big it is?

Ok thanks Quartz.

It would probably be best if Tanuck were sent away. He shouldn't have to live his life alone. Even though I'd miss him a lot.

A few "news" tidbits ...
*The two female polar bears are expected to arrive tomorrow (Friday)
*Of the 24 snow goose eggs, 20 hatched (1 did not survive). The hatchlings are growing quickly ... both colour morphs (white and blue) are represented.
*Six superb starlings arrived from Winnipeg

(Our second male mandrill's name is actually "Rafiki")

There are several "generic" holding spaces available for different species groups around the zoo (e.g., behind the wisent exhibit, behind the P. horse holding, "Gaur 2" in Indo, Savannah Central buildings), as well as a dedicated "outdoor holding" area in the valley near the Mayan Temple. The snow leopard kids from 2007 are indeed in the Health Unit - they were moved there "preshipment" many months ago.

And FYI, this Sunday, the elephant keepers are opening the elephant house to the public (sans elephants) to raise money for elephant conservation projects ($1 for the tour). If you have a chance, come visit!

Ungulate, are the polar bears now in the holding of in the Qurantine Building?
Have you heard anything about the female white rhinos, or the Babirusa?

I thaught we had a mandrill named Rafiki!

Where are the snow leopards from 2007 going, I know Australia and Edmonton, is this true?

Can't wait to see the starlings very preety birds, are they in qurantine now?

*Aurora and Nikita are in the new polar bear holding; Inukshuk is still in the quarantine building.
*We had a baby moose born yesterday that appears to be doing well
*One male reindeer departed for Winnipeg recently
*Two cheetah pairs have been introduced for breeding - Luke and Shamwari, and Rafiki and Mya (yes, we have two Rafiki's in the savannah!). Keep your fingers crossed!

Quartz, the babirusa are still planned, but we are waiting for a female to be recommended first. The female rhinos will likely not arrive until after the busy season.

Great news about the polar bears, moose calf, reindeer (Was it one of the surplus males or laast years calves?) and the cheetah pairings

Just a question about the cheetahs, Isn't it a bit early to separate Bomani and Mahala from Mya? And where are they off to?\

Thanks for the info and have a nice weekend

Awesome news about the new born moose and the introduction process with the cheetahs. :)

Are the babirusa planned for the Americas phase? and what do you mean the busy season? Do you mean "busy" because there of Tundra Trek?

The cheetah cubs are just shy of a year old and have been independent from their mother for a while. I don't believe there are any immediate plans to move them.

The babirusa are actually an Indonesian pig species. If the zoo acquires them, they are slated to be exhibit with the gibbons in the Indo-Malaya Pavilion

The zoo's "busy season" stretches from roughly March break to Thanksgiving, with the summer being the absolute peak. I suspect the rhinos will not arrive before the fall, and it may be 2010 before they touch down.

The babirusa, as ZooGoer said, are slated for Indo

Great news about the moose! I actually very excited because were we just talking about whether or not the moose will breed, obviously they did!

Fingers crossed for more cheetah cubs!

Ungulate is the polar bear holding visiable from the zoomobile do you know?

Thank you for all the interesting stuff!

The building itself is right along the road, just before the Americas Zoomobile stop. I don't think you can get much of a view of the bears inside though ...
