New Zealand animals in overseas zoos

I thought this might be interesting, especially to us kiwis on here. I'll make a list of NZ species that I know are in overseas collections and keep it updated as all you foreign lot provide the info. If you know of species I haven't listed let me know; if you know what zoos have them let me know. This is really just for specifically NZ species or subspecies, not ones also found in Australia or elsewhere.

BIRDS:

North Island brown kiwi (Apteryx mantelli):Frankfurt, Antwerp, Walsrode (apparently they now have them?), Berlin, Rotterdam, San Diego, Washington, Los Angeles, Chicago, Osaka
Fiordland crested penguin (Eudyptes pachyrhynchus):Taronga (Sydney)
Paradise shelduck (Tadorna variegata):
Blue duck (Hymenolaimus malacorhynchus):
NZ shoveller (Anas rhynchotis variegata):
Brown teal (Anas chlorotis):
NZ scaup (Aythya novaeseelandiae):
Weka (Gallirallus australis):
Kea (Nestor notabilis):
North Island kaka (Nestor meridionalis septentrionalis): Stuttgart
Red-crowned kakariki (Cyanoramphus novaezelandiae):
Yellow-crowned kakariki (Cyanoramphus auriceps):
[I'll note here that the "red-crowneds" and "yellow-crowneds" in UK and Europe and probably everywhere else outside NZ are not pure birds because of constant hybridisation by breeders; you just have hybrid birds that look more like one or the other]

REPTILES:

Common tuatara (Sphenodon punctatus): Taronga (Sydney), Chester, Berlin, Dallas, Toledo, Saint Louis
Brothers Islands tuatara (Sphenodon guntheri): San Diego
North Island green tree gecko (Naultinus elegans):
and any others...
[sadly there are also lots of smuggled NZ reptiles held illegally outside of the country]

ANYTHING ELSE?:

Giant weta (Deinacrida heteracantha?):

I was in Antwerp lately but couldn't find the kiwi.
Are you sure Rotterdam has them too?

Rotterdam does not hold kiwi's 100% sure.

Apparantly Antwerp received two male kiwi's again from Frankfurt. They are kept in an outside aviary so they are never seen.

the kiwi info was from the Kiwi Recovery website. I know it doesn't get updated because it says Jurong has them, and they haven't for a long time. So definitely none at Rotterdam?

Keas

I believe that Bristol Zoo has/had keas
I am sure that other UK zoos ( possibly Chester ) may also have them ?

Yeah. Definitely Bristol had Keas last time I was there- a big group too so I'd guess they're still there.
I couldn't be certain but I think they've left Chester's collection.

Thanks Jwer, do you know when we can see them in the zoo?

As far as i know only 1 of the very regular Antwerp Zoo visitors has ever once seen them so they are hardly ever visable during opening hours (not very surprisingly).

Definate NO for Rotterdam though... i could ask when they were there last.

Chester's keas left the collection in 2005 I think. One died, and the other went to pair up.

Were Jurong's kiwis housed in the nocturnal bird house?

yes, the Jurong kiwi were in the nocturnal house, in a rather small enclosure (all the enclosures in Jurong's nocturnal house are too small). Last time I was there (last year) the sign at the front of the house showing what was in all the sections still showed kiwi but they haven't been there for years.

There are quite a few Paradise Shelducks in European collections like Berlin, Walsrode, Augsburg. Liberec Zoo etc. as well as in private collections. The very same is true about the New Zealand Red-crowned Parakeet that are also kept as pets. A small German zoo now even has a walk-through aviary with them and Keas.

Keas have become quite a "standard species" in many European zoos; even some private owners now have them, price up to € 5.000+ per specimen.
Little Blue Penguins are kept in some American (e.g. Omaha) and European (Cologne) zoos.

There some Kiwi at Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, not sure how many or what sub-species though...

the responses to this thread weren't exactly overwhelming, so I decided to just leave it as a list of NZ species overseas rather than numbers and zoos etc

I can only think of a handful of species offhand
kiwis (several species)
kea
tuatara
little penguin (not sure if New Zealand or Australian subspecies)
New Zealand shoveler
New Zealand black duck
New Zealand scaup
morepork

any others?

Has any zoo outside of New Zealand had a New Zealand themed zone?

The only kiwi outside NZ are North Island Brown Kiwi. The Little Blue Penguins outside Australasia are Australian Little Blues. The Moreporks are Australian Boobooks.

Birds:
North Island Brown Kiwi
Kea
Kaka (one at Stuttgart)
Red-crowned Kakariki
Yellow-crowned Kakariki
NZ Falcon
NZ Shoveller
NZ Scaup
NZ Grey Duck
Paradise Duck
There are also a number of birds like White-faced Heron and Little Pied Cormorant which are from both NZ and Australia, which are found in overseas zoos.
The Fiordland Penguins in Australia would also count because they are endemic to NZ, but the specific birds kept there are mostly rescued vagrants to Australia.

Reptiles:
Tuatara
There are a few NZ lizards also - some species have been legally exported in the past, others are smuggled or descended from smuggled animals.

Less specifically, there are some NZ fish found overseas (e.g. marine species in Japanese aquariums, and there used to be some NZ galaxiids and bullies in Europe but I don't know if any are still around), and there are some invertebrates (e.g. three species of NZ stick insects are wild in the UK, and there may still be Tree Weta kept over there. I don't think Giant Weta are kept any more).

While they aren't native to New Zealand, many of the red-necked wallabies in North American zoos are descended from feral animals captured in New Zealand, where they are introduced.
Same with Parma and Tammar Wallabies. If going with non-natives there are also NZ farm breeds like Kunekune pigs, and Arapawa sheep and goats.

Osaka Aquarium comes to mind - their Cook Strait exhibit houses many NZ marine fishes - including Blue Maomao, Barred Moki, Onespot Demoiselle, Eastern Nannygai and Deepwater Burrfish. Of course, some of these species are not endemic to New Zealand - if we are counting species that occur in New Zealand but are not endemic (many such species also occur in temperate waters of Australia), the number of NZ species kept outside of NZ will increase drastically.
