I have just found this forum and I joined immediately as I have been interested in zoos since I first visited Chester (almostly 50 years ago :o).
I still visit Chester regularly and I have also enjoyed visits to several other British zoos this summer. I particularly like Edinburgh, Twycross and Port Lympne as I am very interested in primates. I didn't make it to Howletts this year, to my regret.
I always have my camera with me and I try very hard to get decent photos of the animals, so I will upload a few to the Gallery soon. Here are a couple of recent sample shots, an Alaotra gentle lemur at Marwell (I had to show you that one) and 'Noel', the crowned sifaka at Port Lympne - the first one I have ever seen.

I think I'm going to enjoy it here :)

Welcome to the forum.

I love gentle lemurs, Honey coloured teddy bears is what Gerrald Durrel commented about them. There is something about their little faces that makes you want to hug them.

I have to say thatI don't like the Sifaka. It's a nice picture, but there is something a little bit wrong with it's face. I'm not sure whether that is to do with the paticular individual or not, but Gentle lemurs are my favourite lemurs.

Looking at your location you live quite near me, I live in Saddleworth.

Gentle lemur, do you have any pictures of Broad nosed gentle lemurs? I beleive Edinburgh had some at one point.

Thank you Jonathan, please call me Alan ;)
As far as I know the sifaka is fine. They just look rather strange. I'm not sure if I'd hug a gentle lemur, anything with the teeth and jaws required to eat bamboo needs handling with care!
My avatar is the male broad-nosed gentle lemur that was at Edinburgh (on loan from Paris, I believe). I think the only ones in the UK now are the pair at Port Lympne which have a youngster (but I can't figure out how to get a decent photo of them because of the design of their cage). I'll put a larger version in the gallery.

Welcome Alan, you'll find it interesting here. I like all the zoos you mentioned. I've not been to many this year because of the bad weather, Blackbrook, Blackpool, Chester, Hamerton, London and Stratford Butterfly Farm is all I've seen this year. I'm off to Whipsnade in October.

alan, good to have you on board, i was not impressed with the eshibit the broad nosed gentle lemurs were kept in at edinburgh basically a shed which later had the single worst lemur cage i have ever seen a 30ft high toblerone tube!

welcome. I love the photo of the sifaka. Superb! And the one of the gentle lemur is great -- it makes it look like a cross between a lemur and a wallaby! Awesome!

I could only get one photo of them, they were inside and it was a terrible shot.

Thank you all for the warm welcome :)

I agree entirely about the broad-nosed gentle lemur accomodation, which has subsequently held blue-eyed black lemurs.
I guess it was thought of as a 'way in' to the ring-tailed lemur enclosure, which it adjoins, for which it is not ideal, but which could be acceptable. I'm not sure if it has been ever been used in that way.
I can't remember which species were held there when I visited in July, but the wire runway had been blocked off and I think it was being used for quarantine. It's not ideal for that either; perhaps with all the new building that they are doing for primates at Edinburgh they will have something better for that purpose soon.

My experience was almost the same. The shot in my avatar was the first one I took. I tried very hard to get better ones, but the rest were much worse. I was lucky the first is OK.

Hi Alan, welcome. Did you ever visit Apenheul in The Netherlands. If not, you should: 90% monkeys and apes!!! One of my favorite zoos.

Yes, I'm sure you're right. I haven't been abroad for a long time, but I ought to make the effort to visit Apenheul (and Vincennes, when it's ready, and Beauval, Basle, Zurich, Koln, Frankfurt, Berlin . . . . :)
