Chester Zoo Lion Cubs

Hey, I am new to this site and has just started researching the Lions family tree. I have searched the internet but cannot find the names of the cubs that chester zoo produced in 1996 and 1997 from Chandani and Jake.

If any one could help me that would be great.

Yea thanks I had previously looked at that thread and it helped alot. I just didnt have 'Sarla' for 1997. It's just the 1996 boys I am struggling to find info about.

Hi,

Just looking back over my infomation on the Lions that have lived or been born at chester zoo, does anybody know any infomation or can answer some of my unaswered questions-

  • Who the parents are to Lucifer the lion born at Cotswolds Zoo his father was apparently born at chester.
  • Where did Jake the Lion come from, who where his parents and did he have any siblings?
  • Where was Chandani born, who were her parents and did she have any siblings?
  • Also does anybody know the names of the cubs born at London Zoo to jake the Lion?
  • I also believe Lucifer had a brother if this is true what was his name and where is he now?

Any other infomation would be great.

Lucifer's father was called Subu. He died in 2007 and Subu's brother Chandra moved from Bristol Zoo in febuary 2008 as a companion for the remaining lioness (Lucifer's mother) Lucifer was born at Cotswolds Wildlife Park.

Jake's short loan to London Zoo resulted in the birth of 3 cubs in 1997.

Yes this has been a great help thanks, got a lot of infomation jyust trying to fill in gaps.

  • Do you know if it was Rajah or Chandra went and paired up with Moti at Bristol Zoo?
 
Chandra and Subu both went to Cotswold Wildlife Park before a female arrived from Helsinki for Subu.Hence Chandra left for Bristol before coming back last year.
 
Akela is Lucifer's mother. She still resides at Cotswolds WP. Chandra and Subu were born in October 1994 and moved to Cotswold's in 1996.
 
Ruchi had 3 litters at London before her death in 2004/2005 Her third litter (first and only to Jake) was born on 26.1.97 and consisted of 1:2 cubs. Unfortunaltly I don't have current details for any of her other cubs. Both her other two litters were sired by Arfur who died in 1996 at London. Kamal then arrived from Helsinki but he never bred with Ruchi. I think Kamal went to Twycross before going to Bristol last year as company for Moti.
 
They had 2 litters. 2:0 on 2.11.99 and 1:1 in 2002. The first 2 went to Nuremburg and Frankfurt Zoo's and Lucifer's sister to Prauge Zoo.
 
I have still not been able to fiind the names and sexs of the lions that where born at chester zoo in 1996, or where they are now. Any ifomation would be great.

Kamal fathered the lion cubs born in 1999, Abi is his daughter.
 
Which Cubs did jake father then? Have you anymore infomation on names and where they are now for the cubs born at london?

Jake and Arthur where brothers, Chandani and Ruchi where sisters. These four 'founder' lions where brought to London Zoo in December 1990. The lionesses where born at Sakkar Baugh Zoo in India, and I presume the males came from there as well. They where unrelated to eachother.

Jake fathered the cubs born in January 1997. I don't know the names of the cubs or where they went to, you might get more answers by contacting the zoo. Jake only moved to London on a loan, as Kamal was too young to breed, and was the only breeding male asian lion in the uk.

You could try e-mailing Neil Dorman the studbook co-ordinator at Twycross Zoo.
