Ignored the heat and went to the zoo today. It was busier than I expected but the crowd was good. Not to many school kids.
The place is full of temporary fences and construction workers.
The chimps have moved to the orang utan forest and it seems to be holding up O K at the moment. A couple more weeks may see the end of the greenery in there.
Work has started on the tassie devils area in the old big cat yards next to the B2B.
An anaconda is on display in the first enclosure once you enter the rainforest section of serpentia. ( thats if you are going the right way through there.) It may have been on display for a while but it was the first time I have noticed it.
The new entrance precinct is going to be bigger than I expected. It looks to me that the area is going to come right down to the old dingo and tassie devil exhibits.
A victoria crowned pigeon now resides in the rainforest avairy.
The baby elephant was very active and as usual was holding a large crowd.
I was unable to locate a keeper to ask about the baby langur.
It was a great way to spend the day and still my favourite place to be.

anaconda has only been on display for 2 weeks, the boas will be back on display in another exhibit later on

When I was there about three weeks ago I noticed that the old Tassie Devil Cage (originally a numbat cage back in the 80's) had been gutted. The dingo yard had a lot of undergrowth removed and looked emptier (or maybe they had just mowed the grass). BUt certainly, I got the impression the entry precinct would be extended to the back of those exhibits.

Apparently a couple of keepers give it an hour in the enclosure each morning, then the adults have the exhibit for the rest of the day. It is slowly being introduced to them and now it is turning black and looking less alien, they are showing more interest in it.

Both the devil's and dingo's exhibits are fenced off and by the looks of it may not be reopened any time soon. I am looking forward to seeing a plan of what they intend to do up there. I would like to see them swap the alligators with the saltie's and change the amazonia exhibit into a top end exhibit. The alligators don't fit in up the top of the zoo now that it is mostly aussie stuff.
Anyone know where the agoutis are now kept?

the dingoes have moved to dubbo and i dont think they are coming back last plans i saw there was a path being built through their exhibit :(

Thanks Torie. I think that an aussie zoo that attracts so many overseas tourists needs dingoes. It would be ashame if they don't come back. Are the plans you seen avaliable to the public? They would be great to see. Does anyone know the approximate date of completion?

i havent been on the forum for ages, but some time ago i heard people wondeirng where the male silvery gibbon had gone...
well, i cant be bothered to check ISIS but i did find a reference to the death of the gibbon in an article about Guy Cooper. looks like he did pass away

No male at Taronga listed on ISIS. ISIS doesnot yet have the birth at Mogo either.

(Wildly off topic, but.......)
Glad you're still around glyn! :)
We haven't heard from you for months!

Anyone know where Zoo_Boy went? Haven't heard from him for about a year!

i wondered the same thing. was even a bit worried. zoo_boy had an unwavering tenacity for all thing zoos.

maybe he really did decide he would rather talk to animals.

Zukipah is another who has been gone for a few years. I think even her posts here have been deleted.

Sometimes people from the Industry contact these people via the forum, and discourage them from posting, especiallly the people who are always posting! They try and scare them out of it. I dunno why, I dont see what they have to gain. Maybe the "Get Off" on crushing kids spirits. They tried it on me, but really I don't care who you are, I am entitled to my opinion.

I still have contact with Zooboy off the forum and he's doing great things. Hopefully one day he will return, After all he's probably reading this anyway :)

A small tip to anyone in Sydney - anyone wanting to visit Taronga should do so within the next two weeks (during the week, not on the weekend). Everyone is out queueing to pay for Christmas gifts, so few go to the zoo. Once schools wrap up for the year there won't be any school groups either.

I'm not suggesting the zoo will be empty, because it won't be. But it won't be too crowded either. Only a few thousand per day (and a good deal of them will be Zoo Friends and the Mosman Mums with their strollers). It will remain like this until Christmas Day.

Christmas Day will have about 3,000 people. Boxing Day onwards will be 5,000+ daily until the end of January. The peak is the second week of January when - if it's sunny and warm - there could be 10,000 pax visiting. Sunday the 10th is likely to be the worst.

Of course, this is all dependent on the weather remaining fine. But based on the weather the last few weeks, it doesn't look like it's gonna change in a big way anytime soon.

I often wonder who visits zoos on christmas day, those who don't celebrate it perhaps?
