Paignton Zoo orangutan bulu

Pertinax

The small gorillas have been living with Pertinax since they came out of quarantine. They give him respect, keep their distance and play amongst themselves. It should be a few years before anyone challenges him now.

The new orang utan male in Painton is Demo. He has already sired a baby with Mali in Münster but it was stillborn. I think she should get pregnant again soon.

I have to say I think the Paignton bachelor group works really well because it is actively managed... Damisi will be the fourth male to leave at approaching maturity. It has worked very well so far.

The only time they had problems was when Klaus and Pertinax arrived together from Cologne. They'd always been compatible before but somehow the move changed all that- Klaus had to leave...

At Port Lympne there are a lot of adult silverbacks living together- and a lot more tension...

Sorry, he'll be the fifth. Richard(Prague) Awali (Barcelona) Asato (Beauval) Mapema(Duisburg) and Damisi shortly...

Do you have a date for the stillbirth?

Do you think it has something to do with Pertinax's laid back personality too? Some great apes make invaluable "members of staff " - think of the surrogate mothers at Monkey World , Sally for the chimps and A-Mei for the orangutans. What would they do without them?

'Demo' was born June 1998 at Aarlborg Zoo. Denmark.

His parents; Dennis x Mona. He is inbred to an extent as Dennis was also his grandfather( Dennis x Anna= Mona) Dennis was originally at Chester Zoo.

Partially, as he obviously isn't a bully and is very tolerant. I once saw him gently playing with the younger silverback 'Richard'- something I've not seen anywhere else.

But I think the age breakdown is the key factor, having only one mature male in the group.

I've realised Damisi will actually be the SIXTH male to leave Paignton if you include Klaus- though he didn't really leave for the right reasons!

No he won't- he'll actually be the seventh...! I keep forgetting 'Mambi' who came from Twycross and was part of the original group of; Pertinax/Richard/Asato/Mambi/Awali

'Mambi' wasn't very well socialised and didn't fit in very well. Then he suddenly matured into a very impressive male and had to leave the group. He was sent as 'top dog' to another batchelor group in France(the same one Kumbuka came from) but I believe he may be moving to Spain soon to form a new group with females.:)

Have the new Orangutans arrived at Paignton yet?

Yes, they arrived safely and in true orangutan style are taking a while to settle. I caught sight of Mali yesterday - it was almost the first time she'd moved from a high ledge in her bedroom and Chinta was quick to go over and investigate through the wire mesh. I hope she was being welcoming!

Yes, they sometimes get very upset at being moved. I've heard of occassional cases where an orang has become so depressed in its new home its had to be moved back again to save it.(but that's unusual...)

That makes it more heartbreaking to think how they used to be moved round without any thought to their feelings.
I spent an hour at the zoo today and didn't see a single keeper, so my Mandrill Mission is still not completed. They were 6 Mandrills on show again and I had second thoughts on the older one of the pair who used to be off show. On closer inspection, it looked more like a male than a female.
I overheard another member of staff telling someone that they are getting two crowned mangabeys who have wreaked havoc in two other zoos. I also noticed that there's an additional Diana Monkey in their enclosure.

Yes, a baby was born some months ago. I'm presuming that's what Gigit saw, rather than an additional adult. I would like to see them add to that pair- specially as Newquay have or did have a larger group in a quite small cage- with Newquay and Paignton being under the same management nowadays I'm surprised there's been no move..

Twycross's male 'Batu' is an example of an orang which became very depressed after he'd been moved from a European zoo. He stayed on one shelf hidden under sacks for weeks/months before finally coming out of his shell. He's fully adult now and its all long forgotten now.

Any idea where from?

I think the extra Diana monkey you saw was born there some months ago- unless they've added another as well...

There was another adult sized Diana Monkey as well as the male, female and youngster. I'm afraid my eavesdropping revealed nothing more than that the mangabeys had caused damage to their enclosures in two zoos.

Oh, so presumably they've added another female to the Diana pair, I've been hoping they would for a while now. Maybe they will grow into a nice group now.

I wonder where the Mangabeys will be housed?
