Chester Zoo Visit 24th December

Don't apologise. It was quite a fun guessing game! I am keeping close tabs on the website for further developments.

We were also there today. I'm uploading some photos from the Tropical House today, inc some of the Wrinkled Hornbills including the chick. They're not sure why the female is back on the nest. Current theories are a) she's preparing a second clutch, or b) she's got used to being waited on and is too lazy to come out ;)
She was out on the 24th and helping to feed the chick,so I suspect it could be another clutch fingers crossed.

Yeah, but it's quite frustrating 'There has been a significant birth at Chester.... but I can't tell you what it is'. Some bird or small mammals may be significant at Chester but I would hate to get my hopes up at it being an elephant/lion/tiger or whatever, and it turns out to be a penguin!

At the end of the day, if you can't say what it is, why post it?
You see their`s the difference between you and me,I don`t get excited about an Elephant,Tiger,Lion or any other of the large mammals having a baby because I expect Chester to breed them while an LBG been born is far more exciting to me than any of them, because they are normally alot less common in zoo`s.

I only used elephant/lion/tiger as generic examples, so i hope you don't think i just get excited about just those species breeding!! I do respect Chester's breeding efforts with other less high profile species.

Fine lets leave it at then,I do wish I could say what the birth is but I realy cannot because I will not break the trust of the staff member that told me,but then I wasn`t the one that let the cat out of the bag about the birth!

but I am sure that Orangs of Martha's age have bred in other collections , not as if she is a first-time breeder either .

They certainly have...;) Chester may assume she is too old but that is not true. Same for Zaire the Gorilla at London, though in her case no breeding activity for many years may prevent further fertility/breeding. Not so in Martha's case though.

Just remembered the Australian Lungfish have been taken offshow and their tank is been converted to house Chesters Snake Turtles,I`m not sure if the Lungfish are staying at the zoo because I have heard a rumour they were leaving the collection I realy hope they don`t as they are a fabulous species of fish.

Indeed, lungfish are a great species to exhibit and tell a particularly poignant story of evolution. I rather assume Chester Zoo will want to hold on to the species as it would be a good asset for the Congo Biodome ....!

NOTA BENE: 4 species of remaining lungfish - a living fossil - are African in origin.

Time will tell, I guess!!! :D

They are indeed a very good evolution story but I`m not sure how well Australian Lungfish fit into the Congo;)Although Chester do also have an African Lungfish in the Okapi House as well.

I believe the Lungfish have already been moved to other European collections. They left about 2 weeks ago.

That’s a great shame; Australian lungfish are a particular favourite of mine.

Do you know where they have gone? In particular, have all six have been moved to the same collection, or have they been split up?

Incidentally, and digressing from Australian lungfish, it’s a long while since I last saw a South American lungfish in the UK; are there currently any in UK aquariums?

The Lakes Aquarium had a South American Lungfish when I visited in the summer of this year.

Thanks for letting me know about the South American lungfish; I've never visited the Lakes Aquarium.

Please let me know if you find out more about the Chester Australian lungfish.

I think London still have a South American Lungfish, at least two of Chester's Australian Lungfish were due to go to Rotterdam.

I think London still have a South American Lungfish....

Thank you; that is very interesting.

I’ve just checked the ZSL species inventory for 2008 and a South American lungfish is listed. I’ve not seen the species in London Zoo for quite a while; I’ll have good look in the aquarium on my visit later this week.

What's an LBG?
