According to my opinion, the only big mistake was done by Dvur Kralove and that was at the very beginning. After the former zoo director Vagner caught the original 2.4 pre-adult animals in Sudan, they were let to grow together as one herd at the zoo. That let those rhinos believe they were sibblings and so the original 6 animals never bred with each other. But it was not a common knowledge about white rhinos at the given time that it could have such impact on them. Other imported animals (giraffes, black rhinos etc.) all were socialised as young animals at Dvur and their breeding results were very good. So I can´t really blame them now. They did what they thought was the best for the animals.
There were several international conferences about the best management of the remaining captive northern white rhinos in the past. San Diego WAP came with the proposal to move 1.2 animals from Dvur to SD to meet their lone bull in their big enclosures in better climate. They were loaned to SD in 1989. Unfortunatelly there were only a few mating attempts in that group and they never bred.
