Does anyone have any info on the bonobos at Twycross zoo? Who are the current animals there as i carnt seem to find much info about them. Also is there anything new with the europen bonobo groups?

I`m going to Twycross on the 2 December would you like me to write down the names of all the Bonobos as they have a whose who inside the house?

Their original male is Kakowet II, last offspring of the first San Diego pair (Kakowet & Linda). The recent infants have been fathered by Jasongo, who came from Europe, as did the females - I'm afraid I can't remember names and further details.

One of the females is 'Datou' and may have come from Stuttgart.

This group has been very successful at Twycross- in direct contrast to their gorilla achievments :( On one of my visits a baby Bonobo was born in the middle of the day with the female giving birth up the tree in the outside area. There was a great deal of commotion, and also much screaming from the nearby common chimps who were watching.

The only problem with Bonobos in captivity is they seem always to pluck themselves (stress/nerves?)

Yes it is. I'm not sure they've been exhibited in the UK anywhere else before- except possibly by e.g. London in the past as 'unknown' chimps.

Twycross group is about 11 strong now. They started with about 2.2. so its been very successful.

Ok Twycross Bonobos are,
Gemena (female) born Twycross daughter of Cheka,
Kichele (female) born Wilhelma daughter of Diatou,
Kakowet2 (male) born San Diego father of Keke,
Cheka (female) born Frankfurt mother of Gemena,
Diatou (female) born Wilhelma mother of Kichele/Keke/Lou,
Luo (male) born Twycross son of Jasongo and Diatou,
Keke (male) born Twycross son of Kakowet2 and Diatou,
Maringa (female) born Berlin,
Jasongo (male) born Wuppertal father of Lou,
Bokela (female) born Twycross daughter of Banya,
Banya (female) born Cologne mother of Bokela,
and that the lot hope this helps you out.

The Bonobos are one of Twycross' bigger successes, its a very good group.
Are there still a couple of young ones being handreared separately, or is the whole group together now?

And did you pick up any information on any plans regarding the Gorillas or Elephants?

Bonobos need spacious enclosures to thrive in captivity. The San Diego Wild Animal Park has a large group that has a 2 acre exhibit. It is built on a large hill, and therefore almost half of the exhibit is sloping away from zoo visitors. That feature enables the bonobos to get out of the public eye, and this has helped them with their breeding success. But pretty much every species at the Wild Animal Park has bred better than the majority of other zoos. Why is that? Space to roam.

At the San Diego Zoo there are also a group of bonobos in a decent exhibit, and there are naturally many times when animals are switched back and forth between the two organizations.

2 bonobos that were handreared - Banbo and Khaya moved to Stuttgart Zoo in 2005.
Quote from a website: "A decision by the European maintenance breeding program (EEP), was made for two young females from the British zoo Twycross to come to Stuttgart. On the 20 April 2005: "Khaya" (born at the 19.10.2001) and "Banbo" (born at the 3.9.2002) arrived at the zoo".Zoo-AG Zoopresseschau - Ausgabe 264 vom 5. Mai 2005

Their are none been hand reared at the moment currently split into 2 groups within the house with the outdoor enclosure been used on a rotation bases for the 2 groups. As for any info on the Gorillas or Elephants none at the moment.

does anyone know the reason for the split, which such social animals they are better in a larger group. However i persume the split is for a good reason?

Any news on any pregnancies or births in the 2 groups? It seems such a pity to seperate them into two seperate groups because one big group of 11 all together would be a great exhibit. Other then the 2 that were handraised have any other bonobos born at Twycross left to join other groups?

The groups were separated when Ke-ke reached Sexual maturity to stop him trying to mate with his mum Diatou. There were plans to move him somewhere then bring the groups back together but nothing seems to be happening yet.
Last Summer Daitou became pregnant again and should be due any time now, however she was not coping well with the pregnancy and kept bleeding a lot at night. There were some conecrns that she might lose the baby but I dont know whats happened since then.... can anyone fill me in?

Very late reply I know but unfortunately Diatou "lost" the baby, apparently it never implanted properly and instead she had some kind of growth that could have turned cancerous and killed her, luckily health checks showed this and she was able to expel it and is now pregnant again :)
