Dartmoor Zoo Dartmoor Zoo News

Thanks for the support, glad you enjoyed your keeper for the day experience. The wallabies are hopefully coming in the next few weeks, we had to wait until the park we are getting them from's end of season. The vervet enclosure site has been cleared, the final plans for the house are just been finalised. We have raised enough money for the house and the majority of the fencing now.

Is the new Vervet Monkey Enclosure where the old Lynx Enclosure was that housed Finn?
Thanks :)
I visited Dartmoor in 2007 and thought it was great - Managed to meet Duncan (Ben's brother) and he was very enthusiastic in my interest of animals and obviously very commited to the Park's Welfare.

Thanks for your interest.

The new vervet enclosure is indeed going to be where the old lynx enclosure was. It should look really good when completed!

Thanks Jaguar1 it should look good whats the design for it?
No worries if you cannot say on here.

If you come to the zoo you'll be able to see the design for it. It will be an open top design with plenty trees for them to climb up (obviously far enough away from the sides to prevent them getting out). The size will be over 500 times what they have now!

That Sounds great Jaguar1 :)
Is it similiar in design to the open topped woodland enclosure for Colobus at Port Lympne but smaller and all that?
Will be great to see, unfortunately living in Bedfordshire i can only visit the Zoo on holiday but I hope to visit soon.
Good Luck :)

I'm not familiar with that enclosure. The final build will change slightly as more work is done to accomodate add on's in the design. I can't give too much away anyway otherwise it will spoil the grand opening!

Basically its a huge chunk of Natural Woodland with Electric fencing and they have access to all of the trees in it.
Its a great enclosure giving the monkeys privacy, ability to climb and do what they want and away from visitors.
Good Luck on the building :)
Here it is - http://www.zoochat.com/203/port-lympne-28th-may-84299/
Your enclosure will have nothing like the same space or ancient Woodland but its the same principle set of trees open-topped for freedom for the monkeys.

Sorry to bring up old thread but can't get down to the park regularly at the moment. Does anyone know if work has started on the new enclosure or if it will start after christmas and when they expect it to be finished? Also does anyone know if they have any other developments or new species planned for end of this year/2010.

if you come to the zoo now you'll see a lot of progress has been made to the monkey enclosure. We now have the house set up and have started putting loads of new things like rope ladders and cargo netting into the trees for the monkeys to climb. We just have a few extra hundred pounds to collect to get the mesh! :-) In our front paddock we're also in the process of moving the fallow to another enclosure so we can put some extra ostrich in there and some lechwe within the next few weeks, ready to start off our African Savannah exhibit! :-) Exciting stuff happening at DZP.

I guess it'll be an open hotwired exhibit then?

Good to hear about the monkey enclosure and the Savannah exhibit. Sounds like its going to be a good year, will have to visit soon let us know when there finished.

Update 08/04/10

- The monkey enclosure is nearly completed, they were doing some work in the house today and making a path for visitors to look in the house. I spoke to a keeper who said they were supposed to have the mesh delivered yesterday however it still hasn't been delivered, but he said that they hope to have it ready for some time next week. I thought the enclosure looked good and is definately much bigger and more natural than the old enclosure and will be great for the monkeys when they move in.

- The Fallow Deer have been moved from thier paddock in front of the restraunt to the old red deer paddock in front of the lynx and otters. This is to make way for the new african savanna exibit they are having when thier new ostrich and lechwe arrive.

- The silka deer have been moved into the first paddock on your right when you enter the park.

- Still no wallabies have arrived from porfell yet.

- The female lynx had a wound on the back of the neck that the keepers have said is from the male when mating.

- Capybara have had another baby which now means they have a family of 5 which looks good in the exibit.

- Pygmy goats had twins earlier in the year.

I enjoyed my time there today and think that the park is going in the right direction with the new enclosures and just hope that they have a good summer so they can get the money to renovate some of the empty enclosures/spaces as i do prefer this park to some of the bigger zoo's i have visited.

Do you know where the animals will be coming from and what other species will be added?

Found this news on there new website, states that the new group of female ostrich and lechwe will be coming from Knowsley Safari Park and that they will be adding zebra to the exibit in the not too distant future

Girlfriends for Pete

It doesn't seem to explicitly say female lechwe anywhere (unless I've missed it). Perhaps it's just the wording and they will be taking surplus males?
