The Only Ones In Britain

The 'dromedaries' at West Midlands are actually hybrids.

There are 5.3 Dromedaries at Heythrop (2 of the males are entire). These consist of 2.2 originally imported from the Netherlands about 6 years ago and their four offspring. This may still be the only breeding herd in the UK.

In the past three or four years several private keepers have imported Dromedaries from the continent, Joseph Fossett and Martin Lacey being two examples, for camel trecking, riding and racing.

I've no reason to doubt that there are now animals with breeding potential in the UK other than Heythrop's.

OK. OK. So Dromedaries not so exciting, breeding or not. Points taken.

So how about Himalayan Crocodile Newt?

Marwell has these (well at least one) but not sure of any others in other collections?

did southports mandrill not go to trotters world of animals? if not does anyone know where they got them?

I did a thread on Southport's Mandrills to try and find where they all went.

It seems Southport had around 10 when it closed- half(1.4) went to Trotters(who've now got about 7) and the rest to Jim Clubb's- he had three already so now has 7.

One female from Southport seems to have ended up in the Cerfyn monkey sanctuary in South Wales.

I think the Trotters Mandrills are breeding but not quite sure exactly how many young they have had.

i was in trotters last year and there were several young.though isis say they only have 2.4 im sure they had around 10!

I can't figure this out. Someone told me Trotter's have now got about 13, someone else said its about 7. I wonder which is correct?

I'm pretty sure they got 1.4 from Southport(and only from Southport) If all four females have been breeding, then the higher figure is possible. I'd like to see them build up a large group(like Colchester's-24)

Yes, confirmed....

Off show at the moment.

My contact (in education) hasn't even seen it yet....

Whipsnade should look at importing more Gaur if they can maybe from Paris? or the USA.

I think it more likely that this male with eventually go to another UK collection and a female will be imported to there.....

Would guess at Edindurgh or Chester....

Edinburgh seem to be in the process of arranging an import of gaur from Madrid.

I would think a pair would be likely, Madrid at the moment are holding 3.3
