It's about 25mins for me in the car to Chester, about the same to get to Knowsley and Blue Planet.

It takes about 40-45 min.with subway & bus to my home from l'Oceanografic Valencia my other local "zoo" I have two annual passes.:D

I live in Shropshire, possibly England's least "zoo-y" county, so I don't have a local zoo as such. I do have a good selection around an hour away though: Chester, Dudley, Twycross, West Midlands, and plenty within two hours.

I live in Los Angeles, so it really depends on how crowded the freeways are, but mainly it takes me about 20 minutes to get to the Los Angeles Zoo.

I've always thought of my county, the East Riding of Yorkshire, as the least zoo-y county! We have, I think, 1 or 2 animal farms, a stately home with a few wallabies and llamas and the Deep. That's about it I think!

That's why I consider Chester my 'local', despite being about an hour and a half away.

@NAIB Volunteer: Ahem, yes. And for all Non-US-Citizens, who don't know which cities laying along the Interstate 83: WHICH is your local zoo....?:)

Sorry zoomaniac, the National Aquarium in Baltimore. It's the closest aquairum or zoo, simply because there are no zoos or aquariums nearby in Pennsylvania.

In anything except the lightest traffic, it takes me a little over an hour to get to a proper zoo from my house in Bury. That's quite unusual in England. But the good thing is that I have an excellent choice
  • Chester (to south west)
  • Blackpool (to north west)
  • Chestnut Centre (to south east - probably the closest on the map, but not a lot of motorway)
  • Lotherton Hall (to north east, with another bird garden at Harewood House, rather further up the road).
Blackbrook is quite near too, but I have to go round or through the centre of Manchester, which takes longer. Blue Planet Aquarium, Blackpool SeaLife Centre and the Liverpool World Museum Aquarium are slightly faster journeys. Manchester Museum's collection of reptiles & amphibia is much closer, but on the other side of the city centre. Bolton Museum aquarium is just 10 minutes away, but it's only a small collection.
The nearest collection of large mammals is at Knowsley, but I don't visit safari parks ;).

The Cincinnati Zoo is any where from 30-45 minutes away depending on traffic, and the Columbus Zoo is around an hour and a half away from where I live. There is also the Newport Aquarium which is just across the Ohio River from Cincinnati and that's usually 45-50 minutes away again depending on traffic. I don't visit there as often though.

I live 29 minutes away from the San Diego Zoo and 30 minutes away from the Wild Animal Park. Oh, excuse me, "The San Diego Zoo Safari Park".

It used to be a simple 5 minutes for me. Now that I've moved, the closest zoos are a little over an hour away. Unless I wanted to count the Catoctin Zoo, which I really don't.

All depends which "local" zoo I'm going to :D It takes about 30 or so minutes to get to the Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory and about 45 or so to get to Niagara's Butterfly Conservatory and Bird Kingdom, about the same (maybe more) for Safari Niagara, and about an hour and a bit to Toronto Zoo, depending on traffic.

I live in the suburbs of Antwerp. In 15 minutes I am in the city center by tram / metro, right at the entrance of the Antwerp Zoo.

I was born in Washington D.C. a 5 min walk to the zoo. Now I live in Connecticut about 45 mins away from the Beardsley Zoo, about an hour to 1.5 hrs to the Bronx Zoo, 2 to 2.5 hrs to Roger Williams Park Zoo, and about 45 mins to an hr. to get to both Maritime Aquarium and Mystic Aquarium.
