Colchester Zoo New Species Arrive At Colchester Zoo From The RSCC

BTW regarding the Patas monkeys their enclosure is pretty bad. I personally think they should sell there gelada babboons and use that area for the patas monkeys. What do you guys think?

I second that and do hope patas monkeys will enjoy a better enclosure in the African savannah/forest section of the zoo ....

BTW, I really do not understand why patas monkey are termed a boring species. I fondly remind myself of the excellent Apenheul patas monkey exhibit (only for the gorillas to spoil it).

I think they're brilliant. Olomouc and Woburn have fantastic displays for them.

I would like Colchester to send its remaining Patas to Woburn. The old enclosure up by where the sealions are now was fantastic. It should not be the rule that a shrinking group that has ceased breeding should be given a smaller enclosure - its not as if the remaining monkeys won't exercise more. Does anyone know why the cage is hotwired along the top of the inside wall? Do they not do roof feeds, or is this still possible? Sorry I haven't seen it. And sorry to go off topic.

I would prefer to see the Patas moved to a better (open) enclosure in the 'Edge of Africa' area- the Geladas too but I think its unlikely they'll move in the short term.

I've always thought that patas monkeys would look great in with ungulates like giraffes, does anyone know if anything like this can be seen anywhere? There might be problems containing the monkeys though, who would easily escape from the sort of low walls which restrict hoofstock. I have seen patas mixed with gorillas at Beauval which seemed to work fine but gorillas are not a savannah species.

I guess it would require a moat and hot-wiring around the INNER and OUTER perimeter.

Just in, Colchester Zoo have announced on their facebook page that Sun Bears "Srey Ya and Jo-Jo", currently residents at the RSCC will indeed be arriving at Colchester Zoo. Thanks Nisha :o for the news, Qoute:

"We are currently refurbishing our old Orangutan enclosure to provide a pair of sun bears with a temporary accommodation before creating a brand new enclosure for them. They are called Srey Ya, a female and Jo-Jo a male and were confiscated... by Government Anti-Poaching Patrols in Cambodia. They arrived at the Rare Species Conservation Centre in Kent from Cambodia in late December 2007 and were thefirst sun bears to be housed in Britain for over 30 years when they arrived. We are expecting them to be transferred to us within the next few weeks. We'll post more information as soon as we have it!"

EDIT: This was added to the very same conversation which included Colchester confirming such information as: "That is correct we are currently refurbishing the old Orangutan enclosure, close to the zoo entrance, to create a temporary enclosure for a pair of rescued sun bears" and "A brand new enclosure will be developed for them in the future which is likely to cost around £375,000 so there will be a fundraising campaign in place soon."
This was posted as a comment after a member of public asked if the rumour of Sun Bears is true.

Ok folks, I see that moving them into the gelada enclosure is seemingly not so popular. I guess where they could build an enclosure for them would be near the black and white colubus monkey area. You might well be able to see the roman river from there.

Alternitively as has been sugested by Johnstoni maybe Woburn is the other option. Presumbeably mix them in with their present group? I don't know whether they can do roof feeds but I have seen a keeper chuck in food for them at the mesh fence area where visitors aren't supposed to go down.

Went to the zoo today. One of the female Saki monkeys has passed away. Wasn't told any more details but will be finding out next Tues/Weds when I go

Oh no, what a shame re: the saki monkey.

Paix ..... yes, the geladas are just behind the meerkat enclosure, and also behind the birds of prey display area.

I'd hate the geladas to go (so would my daughter as she's adopted Junior) - think they're a great exhibit and a lovely family group, though I agree with Pertinax that their enclosure isn't particularly good. It's been said before - quite probably by Pertinax - that ironically (given their natural habitat) the gelada enclosure is one of the few areas in Colchester that has no fake rock, even though it'd be quite appropriate for them !

Agree the patas monkeys are a sad display, though I find them fascinating and very striking all the same. That end particular corner of the zoo does seem to be neglected, almost an afterthought, in terms of its displays ..... the monkeys seem somewhat out on a limb where they are. The pygmy hippo area is also horrid and far too small in my opinion. I'd personally get rid of that playground near the mandrills and use the space for a new exhibit, e.g. the patas monkeys.

Very sad news. I did wonder when I only saw two on Monday - as I said in comments about my photos in the Gallery.

I only saw two all day, but assumed that John Lewis was there for health checks etc as I saw him lots during the day. I spoke to a member of staff that I chat to most visits and asked her about the 3rd Saki, which is when she told me the sad news. I was gutted, I spent hours on Friday watching them and ages again yesterday watching the 2 remaining ones. Hopefully the 2 that are left will be given a clean bill of health and will be happy and healthy in their new home. The member of staff that told me is finding out their names and will let me know as soon as she finds out so I'll post it on here for you guys too
