Rare Species Conservation Centre RSCC animal transfers and general news

Just things like standing up on their back legs to get at things and using their tails as a counter balance etc...
 
The marbled cats would be excellent for a small felid collection!

What will be the mainstay of the new off-exhibit facility, just felids or ...?
 
I wouldn't be surprised if the RSCC continue to do business importing unusual species which then radiate out into other UK collections. I does not appear that they would need to make a great deal of money out of this to justify it; much of their work has been a drive to represent unusual species in the UK and link these ambassador/storyteller populations with in situ work.

Surely that would make them an animal dealer? I thought those days had gone, or is that naive? i dont know if RSCC are BIAZA members or EAZA memebers, but could they operate as an animal dealer if they were?
 
As I understand it, quarantining animals for other zoos can be charged as a service, even if only to cover costs, however this is not the same as 'selling or buying' animals, which would not be something EAZA collections would be able to be seen doing with ESB or EEP species, or anything that is not yet part of a program and was born in the wild and listed under CITES.

I meant I can imagine them still running services to quarantine species coming into the UK for other zoos, as they have done for a number already (Colchester's tamanduas, Exmoor's tayra, Fennec Foxes to another collection I forget which one, and Cheetah to...Eagle Heights?). In fact there have always been a number of species at the RSCC which have been listed as part of their collection but which have quickly moved on to other collections.

So, cloud rats all transferred out to Edinburgh Zoo?

A Balabac mouse deer returned to Wroclaw Zoo (a male as per Wroclaw Zoo forum) Can anyone confirm this from RSCC?

To be fair, unless I've missed something I don't think it's confirmed that Edinburgh's cloud rats came from RSCC. Having said that, it would fit with current events.

It was the only Balabac left at RSCC. Sending it to Wroclaw seems the logical thing to do, as they're the only other holders in Europe.
 
RSCC is moving out all non carnivores and nocturnal prosimians to other collections, the collection is to focus solely on carnivora and nocturnal prosimians. Due to the fact it could not expand as quickly as it wished to it decided to limit the collection. The centre will be renamed and will be open only on open days which will be booked on the website, the hope is that the reduction in visitors to a minimum will reduce stress in the small felids in particular. The main focus will be managing the small carnivore programs that RSCC started ie: Aardwolf, Palawan Binturong, Smooth Coated Otter and some soon to be new small felid breeding programs. RSCC will still manage the Bearded Saki and Balabac Chevrotain to ensure a future for them, but they will not currently be maintained on the site.

Balabac Chevrotain have been sent to Wroclaw - to pair up and then Rotterdam will soon house the species also as part of the program.

Sun Bears, Gibbons and some Smooth Coated Otters will move to Colchester Zoo.
An Aardwolf pair will be sent to Edinburgh as part of the breeding co operative.
Cloud Rats have been sent to Edinburgh.
Cuscus have been sent to Edinburgh.
Tapirs have moved to Prague Zoo.

Recently more Aardwolf and Asian Golden Cat have arrived at RSCC and a new facility for Golden Cat will be started in the next few weeks.

Thanks for the update. Sounds like an interesting and hopefully productive plan (Asian Golden Cats are a fantastic addition).

Any idea when the centre closes to the general public? I'm visiting next Sunday (my main reason for visting Kent) and, fingers crossed, I'm really hoping it'll still be open then.
 
Sounds like some interesting developments afoot - and considering some of the criticisms regarding animals being 'crammed in' at Sandwich, maybe not such a bad idea. I'm liking the thought of Smooth Coated Otters and especially Sun Bears at Colchester! :D Whatever your thoughts on the RSCC, they've brought some cracking species back into the UK and for that they deserve top credit!
 
Do you know where the golden cats came from? It would be awsome if they imported some new animales.
 
Perhaps one of the trio at Edinburgh has ended up at RSCC in exchange for all those wonderful animals.
I guess the cuscus will be the occupier of the other vacant enclosure in the magic forest.
