Chester Zoo Questions and comments about Chester Zoo

They've not been posted. The zoo is to provide more information in the 2007 annual report which is due to be published early in May. Also Chester zoo members will obtain some information at the AGM, also in May.

OK, thanks for the info.

Another quick question - does anyone know what's happening with the old orangutan house? Is it just being left as it is? I thought it was going to be demolished.

The old orang will be staying unless they decide to implement stage/phase 2 of the realm of the red ape, which i believe to be an extension of the realm of the red ape.

Me again :) ... This time a question about the incoming cheetahs.
I know from comments on this forum that 6 cheetahs are being sought, but does anyone konw the male/female numbers? (like if it'll be 2.4 or 3.3)

And, referring to the cheetah exhibit plan which was posted on this forum, there are two compounds to the enclosre. I presume the males would be allocated the slightly smaller 'compound 1' & the females the larger 'compond 2'? Although both are shown as having cubbing pens... I suppose that's for flexibility?

Tempest, it will be 3.3 Cheetahs arriving and I assume the enclosure will be spilt as you think as well...

I diagree about the pens. Pen 1 will be quieter and also gives access to the three rear cubbing pens, so I am sure it will be for the females.
Pen 2 is larger and has the main viewing point, so it should be more suitable for the males.

But compound 1 will have the bridge going over it... it won't be that much quieter will it?
The plan which was posted does show an access gate linking the back three pens to compound 2.

The bridge can be closed off if needed. The section that's being built has high sides and glass windows, if the rest is the same I don't think it will cause much disturbance for the animals beneath. I do think that the path from Pen 1 to the house is designed to keep the animals in Pen 2 away from the cubbing pens.
I also think there will need to be some screening behind Pen 1 and the cubbing pens as the public footpath is so close.

Are these enclosures going to be siuated anywhere near the Lions?

In terms of distance, it is fairly close. As writhedhornbill pointed out the canal is in between them, not to mention the pathways and anoa and lemur islands, so the cheetahs should be ok...

...unlike Whipsnade's new Cheetah enclosure which is going to be situated in very close proximity to the lions and without much division betweeen them.

Even if they can't see them, the Cheetahs will know how near the Lions are when they roar... it may make them nervous at first but over time they probably come to realise the roaring never gets any closer and perhaps learn to ignore it. Same at Whipsnade.

I know that Cheetahs are fearful of lions in the wild- whether their proximity in captivity really has an adverse affect as is sometimes suggested I don't know- unfortunately we can't ask the cheetahs.....

As a rough estimate I would say the closest distance between the lions and the cheetahs would be 65-70 metres.

I'll bet a wild cheetah wouldn't hang around if it heard a lion roaring that close... I really don't know if this proximity business really does affect them, or how much, in captivity.

The lechwe were a similar distance from the lions, it didn't seem to bother them.
Pertinax as you said earlier other species must get used to the sound and smell of the lions.

Hi - they are Iranian cheetahs and are due within the next couple of months, they will be coming from the Arab Emirates and so should fit in with the zoning. Impossible? I think not. A couple of keepers are due to possibly fly out to see them beforehand.

Wow! I had thought Chester would go with African Cheetahs in the beginning, especially in a new exhibit not previously used by Cheetahs (a tester species, I guess).

Iranian Cheetahs will be very interesting. There can't be too many in western captivity...

Chris i will eat my hat if they are true Asiatic cheetah, they are the sub species Acinonyx Jubatus Soemmeringii, i'm sure which come from North east Africa.
There are NO true Asiatic cheetah in captivity anywhere in the world.

Also Chester has kept cheetahs in the past and not bred them. If this really is the Asiatic subspecies then it is a bit of a gamble for Chester with such a fickle breeder.

So would I....
