I take it Marwell is bigger? Looking at their website, they don't have lions?

Out of the two which has the best viewing on Leopards?

(Post it in the United Kingdom Forum mate; this is the General Zoo Discussion Forum.)

no they don't have any lions, but marwells collection is brilliant and i have been too marwell many a time, and it is truley very good. From What i've from Lintons pctures, Marwell has the Best Viewing Of Leopards

Marwell is a lot bigger. Completely different scale.

It doesn't have lions but having been to both zoos I'd certainly agree with Cat-Man that Marwell has better leopard viewing.

'Fact is it the only one that allows raised viewing of the leopards in the trees? Suprised no one else has caught onto this, but I could be wrong.
And yep, both the amur and snow leopards have excellent viewing and are brilliant photography subjects if you've got a camera on hand. :)

Ive just come back from a visit to Marwell and I have to say its a wonderful park with healthy looking animals. I spent over 6 hours there, there is so much to do and see! There are no lions but you barely miss them in the collection, the Amur Leopards and Amur Tigers are a highlight of the zoo and have great enclosures! This Sunday we managed to see the Amur Tigers and Meerkats get pumpkins for enrichment, it was great to see! :)

Sorry for posting is the wrong section!

Which one has rasied viewing of Leopards?

Sounds like Marwell is the bigger and better of the two. I have taken the day of work next wedensday to visit either one but looks like Marwell might be the winner!!

Does surprise me though that for such a big Zoo they don't keep Lions.

Marwell.

@ Zambar - another zoo with raised viewing for leopards is Thrigby Hall.

Went to Marwell today. Really enoyed it and all the animals looked healthy. Was a little disappointed with the size of the Leopard enclosure though.

Seeing Leopards again brought me to tears, they are just such beautiful animals. Managed to get some good photos, will be going back early next year after I should have a new camera for christmas!!

Well if you are disappointed with one of the best Leopard enclosures in the UK don`t bother going to any of the rest we have mentioned in this thread, because i would hate to think what you will say about them!

I say that because compared to other big cats they didn't have as much space. There were lots of nice tree branches etc.. for them to climb on and also very good viewing of them.

I guess they have more vertical space they can use than the other cats. By the way I'm a big fan of the ocelot enclosure at Marwell.

That's true. I was very impressed with the Tiger enclosure, very big and looked very very natural. Also the Tropical World, some of the tanks in there were really well done, with streams etc.. running through them, was very impressed with them.

Overall, a excellent Zoo. Have to pick my next one to visit now! Any suggestions?

They were asleep, the guy said they had 2 cubs in there but they were both tucked up togethor sleeping!!
From what I could see, stunning though! They had a very nice enclosure, which seems to be "out of the way" from everything else. Will be going back after christmas so hoping to see them abit better then.

Love the meerkats aswel, soooo cute!

I have to say one of my favourite leopard enclosures in the UK has to be the Amur Leopard Enclosure at Thrigby, in effect it is a Howletts Enclosure with a walkway going through and up to the centre like a stairway to a viewing platform right at the top in the centre.
Lots of climbing oppurtunities for the leopards, and it was quite a nice 'dark' and private atmosphere for them. Very nice, shows not all the best enclosures need millions spent on them with a fancy name.

Linton and Marwell are in comparison very very different, Marwell is now owned by a very large organisation whereas Linton is family owned therefore the way money is spent will be different, bigger enclosures at Linton will take alot more time to plan and build then that at Marwell.
Linton also has 3 species of Leopard, African, Clouded and Snow, all in mediocre but very good enclosures, And a new African Enclosure is in the development stage, at the moment the old leopard enclosure is simply an empty site waiting for redevelopment.

Thanks for that. The Leopard enclosure at Thrigby sounds really good. I think that might be my next zoo to visit, sounds like it's worth going. How about photographing them? Is there glass?

Trying to take photos of the leopards is very difficult as it is just wire mesh no glass at all, But a very good enclosure at that, offering more privacy and less exposure to the animals.

I could just sit there and watch them all day without taking photos anyway so might be worth a visit :D

Marwell did have lions (Asiatic) from 1978 to 2001, when the last one died. I believe it had a total of two pairs, including the pair from Jersey. The lions did not breed in the Park and it is only fairly recently the old lion house has been swept away. The zoo is considering having lions again in the near future, but this time they will be the African kind.
