ZSL Whipsnade Zoo Whipsnade Updates

Mtoto has been moved to Karlsruhe Zoo in Germany and all went well during the transfer, he arrived there about a week ago. The old breeding male from Karlsruhe died about 1-2 years ago.

i have heard rumours that whipsnade is going to get a new sealion female from longleat at some point

Whipsnade obtained another 0:2 from Chester earlier this year so would they have room for 1:4? (Chester female's X2, juvenile bull and his mother + new female)

Hello! I was up at Whipsnade on Tuesday and have a few observations.
•Wild whipsnade-both wolverine were really active climbing trees, although no sign of the lynx. The wild boar are all getting really big so the paddock looks a little worse for wear!

• Sea lions were all really active ( they have a female called kyra who joined the zoo from longleat, alongside dominic, salt, Lara and bayley)

• they have another Asian rhino calf, a girl born to beluki last week

• spotted the red panda cub enjoying some bamboo ( no indication of whether it is a boy or girl)

• they have a new common hippo male who arrived from Dublin zoo about a week ago

• still only the two female giraffes and no one around to ask about a male either

Think that was all the major things, but will add more if I think of anything I've missed!

Great to hear about the rhino calf!

Great to know there's a new hippo bull, here's hoping for the not-so-tiny-patter of baby feet. ;)

2 calves in a year thats great news. Nice to see there is a breeding group of hippos again.

Was there any building work taking place at Whipsnade?

Didn't see any building work anywhere and no the new male hippo wasn't on show and the only info I got was that he came from Dublin.

What is holding up the transfer as there are sufficient spare males on the Continent available. I would have thought the giraffe male would be there by now???

Great news the second rhino calf is here!
2 down, 1 to go ... ;)

Thanks for this very clear update.;)

Very good news about the 2nd rhino calf. Were both the Mothers and calves in the old sheds and yards, and not in the new house?

Amazing news about the male Hippo- I didn't think they would ever bother to source another male. AFAIK this male is the adult offspring of the pair at Dublin though they may have only had the father & son more recently(though they are still listed with 2.1)- so possibly it could be the father, but more likely I think, the son. I know Dublin are definately the only British Isles zoo Whipsnade could have got a male Common Hippo from though.

Its taking them a long time to bring in a new male Giraffe- 18 months(or more) now.

It’s good to know that Whipsnade has a male hippopotamus again and interesting to learn that it came from Dublin.

Some of the offspring of ‘Henry’ and ‘Belinda’ Whipsnade’s very long-lived and prolific hippos went to Dublin Zoo. I wonder if the new male is a descendant of the old Whipsnade line?

I traced Henry and Belinda's 'tree' of offspring once and indeed one of their offspring did breed at Dublin- I think it may have been a female which was from Henry x his own daughter. I'm not sure if this male is related to her though.

As I said above, I'm both surprised and pleased to know Whipsnade have a male again..

i have just got home from whipsnade after reading about new bull last night i decided to go investigate.
the new bull is hoovie from dublin and is 9yrs old. they are hoping to breed him with both lola and nigna. they are waiting for him to have 3 clear fecal samples and then will start introductions. but they have seen each other out the back but have not had actual contact.

if i remember correctly, hoovie's mother was killed by a member of public throwing something into the pool and she ate it. something in my mind is saying it was a tennis ball but i may be making that up....
