Chester Zoo Questions and comments about Chester Zoo

The baby giraffe 'Margaret' looks healthy and was attracting a huge crowd. The first time that i've seen people queuing outside the giraffe house! Could possibly become the new Tejas... ;)

With all due respect, babies are babies - but Giraffe's just aren't Lions - RAWR!

Lol, sorry.

That wasn't actually what I was posting for, i wondered if anyone (it's going to be Rob, but its best to post publicly) knew when the Babirusa came into the collection, when the lions have had cubs and also when the new Elephant house was put to use?

I have a load of old pictures that I can't place other than when I occasionally appear. The brand of film used is marked on the back so I can guess but it seems to be inconsistent.

For starters, I have a really dark picture I am 70% sure is of Babirusa, pointing toward the then Camel, now Okapi house. It's really dark so I can't tell and the heads are obscured by grass and the rear of the first, lol.

The pictures on Kodak film, nothing saying they are from the same visit, include this along with a picture of my friend's hand patting a Prezwalski's horse, what I believe to be the new elephant outdoor area, some lion cubs which I previously thought may be Asoka (I dont know his age off hand to prove or place this - though I have a pic of the sign somewhere) and some pictures explicitly taken in 1998 as they have me in them.

Could the picture show Babirusa, and are all the pictures likely to be from 1998? Were there lion cubs then?

I Can answer one question for you. The Babirusa came into the collection in 1997. They shared their enclsoure with the anoas for a while

AHA! Since the Anoa used to be in the paddock in question I believe (when Lemurs were where the hogs were etc), that would make sense so it is Babirusa.

I must have taken the picture when I went for my 11th birthday on Valentines 1998... funny how I never remember seeing them except on the current map and on Zoo Days (when I worked out where they had gone the canal path was fenced off)

Asoka was born in 1998.

Asian Lion births at Chester
1994 2.1
1996 3.0
1997 1.3
1998 2.1
2000 0.1 did not survive
2007 2.0+ (1+ did not survive)

Your picture will be a babirusa.

The New Elephant House opened in 2006. The previous one (the same site) opened in 1961

Nice one oh pit of knowledge you :)

I've worked out every kodak i have is 1998 now, which means one of the cubs is Asoka then. How darling. Its strange that you kind of assume the animals would be the same ones all the time anyway, especially if you don't have any inside knowledge, but in this case I found it weird.

Cheers Rob

I'm puzzled by your comments about the horses. I've only known then to have been kept in the present location, and previous to that where the scimitar-horned oryx are and then where the tapirs are (including half of the bear enclosure)

If you mean me, I didnt mean the horse was in the Elephant house, I was referring to having pictures of the two seperate things.

If my friendwas there it was 1994 (or 1996?) or 1998. Then seperate the elephant house would have been a different time marker, getting me closer to working out when the film was from.

It was Murder She Wrote sleuthery, with none of Angela Lansbury's mystery novel / english teacher eloquence. ;)

It's fine mate, more often than not it's my stupid wording that is to blame
