Zoo Barcelona Zoològic de Barcelona News

No, at the former lemur exhibit they are building the new warthog exhibit (but viewing all the "new" exhibits I expect the worst... ). The hippo enclosure has been reduced a bit due the construction of the elephant dormitories. To separate the hippos from the dormitories they put metallic bars, but all of them are oxidated...

The Aquarama and Madagascar exhibits are both closed since many months without any official explanation. The masterplan is stopped, but the zoo still shows to the visitors the container with all the renders, maps and videos explaining the masterplan. For a normal visitor seems that the zoo is improving the facilities, but those who often visit it is the opposite. The best thing to show this is what is happening at the sabana zone, especially with the elephants, or al the simple-wooden provisional exhibits.

I guess, in the end we all get the administration we deserve. However, I do feel with you and other socios that it is rather a sad state for all of us. It does not bode well for Espagna to have an ayuntamiento that does make the zoo a victim of economic austerity package by taking away all financial resources for the new Masterplan only presented with big governmental support last year.

Suffice, I would expect the zoo to work towards their Masterplan and slowly renovate or bulldozer the old and recreate new exhibits in their place in train with their new collection plan. From your comments I must glean that that is not what is happening, nor is it being explained publicly. That is really bad news, no public transparency ...

Perhaps, next time I am around Barca, we can go down the zoo together and talk some more in detail ..

No problem if it's in weekend.

I have to announce bad news. Nika, one of the oldest dolphins in Europe died last weekend.

On the other hand, the zoo announced again the project of the Sahel exhibit (containing elephants, gazelles, hippos, crocodiles, warthogs and other animals), with a similar naturalization than Bioparc exhibits. This is the model showed on TV:

They said that will be complete on 2012, but I really don't think so. On the terrains where this exhibit should be built, they have just built the two aviaries for vultures and a pic-nic zone and now they started the warthogs exhibits in other place (on the former lemur island).

According to ISIS, Barcelona now holds 1.1 golden-headed quetzal. All i know is that Barcelona had 1 male, and I thought ISIS also showed 1.0 untill reasonably recently. Did they manage to find him a mate?

I always saw only one male. I'll check it on my next visit (maybe this weekend).

Thanks for the information!

Regarding the quetzals, I still only see one on display.

Since last week, the zoo has on display three black howler monkeys (Alouatta caraya).

I actually quite taken with the bearded and black vulture aviaries in the Zona Nueva. The interpretation and signage is ab fab and the vultures have good distance between them and the public to the far side.

Truthfully: I remain a bit puzzled these will have to go when the new Sahel Zone comes up in 2012/2013 (not that I am counting on the projected opening date :().

For what it is worth: I would expand the zoo at the present location ... full stop.

2 pileated gibbon have arrived from Zurich
1 southern ground hornbill hatched.

First the good news, then the bad ones....

Good news:

2 male spotted hyenas arrived from Jaszbereny Zoo. They are on the former wild african dog exhibit.
A pair of Western Plantain-eaters are on display at the cranes aviary

Bad news:

The new mayor of Barcelona have cancelled the Marine Zoo and the current masterplan for the Barcelona Zoo. He wants to focus only to the current zoo, and a new masterplan for it will be presented before the end of this year.

As happened before with the previous mayor, I’m sure that he will show the new masterplan (to gain popularity) and some months after, he will say that there’s no money to apply it. It’s always the same story.

The Male of Sumatran tiger it's named Baros.I don't know the birthplace.

I believe he was born at Barcelona in 2003. I will find the names of his parents later

EDIT: His mother was called Nena. She was born 27th Sep 1993 at Krefeld and died at Barcelona on 29th July 2007. I haven't got any details on his father atm

@aim_foliksta: Any news about the new Masterplan? (It is so sad that the 2-Zoo-Plan has been cancelled). And can Barcelona Zoo keep its current size because of the cancelled marine park?

Gorilla 'Awali'

Does anyone know what's happening with male Gorilla 'Awali'. Is he to stay at Barcelona, or where he's gone or where will he go?(I believe he is being replaced by another male, as he's no good for breeding.)

The zoo has received over 1.1 million visitors this year so far, which is an attendance record for the zoo.
0.0.6 Cuvier's dwarf caiman have hatched.

Was the addition of the harbour seals in preparation for the marine park? Are the sea lions staying in the aquarama? Where the two groups of dolphins separate before and now mixed? Sorry, don't know much about Barca :P
