Chester Zoo Giraffe Arrival

A new female Rothshild giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis rothschildi) joined Chester's group today.

She's four-and-a-half-year-old Dagmar, from a safari park in Denmark. I could guess which one, but I'm sure Zoogiraffe can tell us for certain.

Although not out on the paddock, she seemed to settle in really well, she was calm and browsing by the end of the afternoon.

Some photographs attached of the transport container passing between the okapi and red river hogs, the giraffe being unloaded (note flying whale) and an utterly lousy image of the new arrival herself for reference purposes only.

Thanks, I look forward to seeing her next week.
Has she been it quarantine somewhere?
 
Chester have alot of experience of introducing new Giraffes,into the herd seeing as they have kept the species for well over 50 years now,and certainly the Senior Mammal Curator has certainly over seen alot of new Giraffe`s arriving into the zoo,so I wouldn`t worry about the speed of it!

As for which collection she has come form if its a Safari Park in Denmark it can only be Knuthenborg Safari Park!

Although called 'zoo', Givskud is also a safari park and also has Rothschild's Giraffes according to Zootierliste, so unless you know something I don't (quite possible) it could also be Givskud.

My guess would've been Knuthenborg, apparently she has come from a mixed exhibit with rhinos and other small hoofstock, and if memory serves that fits the profile.

On the other hand, ISIS lists Ebeltoft as having only one female but I don't know that zoo.

I was going by zootierlist as my guide as it alot more accurate for Europe than ISIS ever is.

Forgive us, for entering the discussion :).

Potentially, it could be any of the 3 collections mentioned: either Bandholm-Knuthenborg Safari Park (which has changed over from hybrids to a pure rothschildi herd over the last few years), Givskud Safari (which did the same process some time earlier and is now completely on pure-bred rothschildi) and the last-named Ebeltoft Zoo (which maintains a single pure-bred rothschildi female amongst a herd of hybrids which incidentally originate mostly from the other aforementioned parks).

Givskud: had 2.2 additions in the 2007-2010 timeframe.
Knuthenborg: had 0.3 additions in the 2007-2010 timeframe.
Ebeltoft: 0.1 in same time period.
Incidentally, Ebeltoft used to exhibit its giraffe with a single black rhino ... (not anymore so as not what you call a resounding success).

For the record: glad Chester now has a full compliment of a 1.4 breeding group on site. This should bode well for future generations of rothschildis. :)
 
I'm really not one for caring about animals' personal names and who begat whom, but if the giraffe is Dagmar then she must have come from Knuthenborg.

(disclaimer: I really know nothing at all about European giraffes -- I sneakily did some digging and came up with, oh, this Zoochat thread http://www.zoochat.com/327/giraffes-115914/ :D)
 
Just watching the webcam and i counted 5 Giraffe so either the female group are out or the new female is being kept inside and Thorn let out.
 
This morning all 6 giraffes were together - Thorn, Tula, Dagmar, Aoife, Orla, Faida...
 
What is the capacity of the giraffe house? I'm trying to remember the largest number of giraffes I've seen at Chester, and six is probably close

They had seven for a short time after Tula was born
Aoife, Tula, Kelly, Bella, Orla, Faida, Thorn
 
I hate these stories which are 'twisted' to suit the situation, e.g. a search for a partner to tie in with Valentine's Day. It implies this Giraffe male was lonely and single whereas he already had several females. What rubbish.:(

Similar to Colchester's 'Valentine' tigers story last year and the one about Bobby the London Zoo Gorilla 'who'd never seen the open sky before'. Twaddle!: mad:
