Excellent news. Always had a soft spot for Hippotragus so was very glad to see these back at Chester and doubly pleased to see them breeding.

Paignton Zoo have stated Zuri the young Black Rhino is to move to Chester soon a date is yet to be confirmed.
This move has been on the cards for quiet awhile but before she moves a few other changes need to take place at Chester first, but I cannot say what as they were told off the record to me by a very senior person at Chester!!

Thans Alan, will certainly keep that in mind :) Sand lizards nearby as well :) - a lovely, quiet area of the zoo with some nice species (when you actually see them!)

Myself and my girlfriend went down to Chester on the day of the royal wedding - the sand lizards were *extremely* active and visible that day, I may have to upload my photographs!

The toads were as invisible as ever, though ;)

Visited Chester today with my school i'd of prefered to be on my own very loud group!
A few points-
1)Asha and Iblis the Asiatic Lions were mating
2)I saw 3 Cheetahs in the furthest enclosure and either Adaze or Kinky tail in the yurt enclosure.
3)Both Sumatran Tigers were pacing around.
4)All Asian Elephant were out.
5)Saw the baby Dwarf Mongoose first time.
6)Construction work was on the Zebra area.
7)Saw Kitani and Sammy in TSAVO.
8)Stuma and Dicky the Okapis were together.

Interesting to hear - haven't heard this in a while but I still think it's too late. There's only ever been one female who's bred at her age in Europe before (Helsinki, December 2010)

Three emperor tamarin have gone on show in a mixed exhibit with the golden-headed lion tamarin. A big hit with the public they are too!

I was undecied if I was going to Chester next week, now I definately am.

isn't this the permanent state of affairs with these two now?

I saw okapi breeding behaviour today: Dickie was following Stuma around, groaning softly and doing gentle foreleg lifting (laufschlag). Eventually he tried to mount a couple of times, I thought unsuccessfully - but I read that okapi matings may be very brief. I have some poor photos, which I will post soon.
I also saw a newly fledged Montserrat oriole and 4 brown-breasted barbet chicks (Lybius melanopterus) in the upper aviaries in the Tropical House (I still prefer the old name, there are far too many Realms at Chester).
I got my first views of the Temminck's tragopan chicks which were close to the front wire, the San Francisco garter snake (in a refitted spider enclosure) and the emperor tamarins.

Alan

I was at the zoo on saturday, there looks liek some work is going to take place in the enclosure next to the painted dogs, the field linked to the zebra enclosure? anyone know what this is or is it just some smarting up, as i guess the old house there isnt used anymore?
