Longleat Safari & Adventure Park Longleat Safari Park News 2011

Nico's island, or more so his house, isn't really big enough for a group of gorillas now it would seem. I'm assuming they'll just give the island up to the sea lions or a species of gibbon/monkey when he dies.

Also, is the Summer season the summer holidays or literally Summer, ie start of June? Just I'll be going down there in the second week of June and don't know whether thats too early for the cheetahs or raptors.

I agree with you about the island, it is too small for more than a couple of gorillas. Nico's well looked after but time catches us all someday.

You might be lucky with the cheetahs, Jonathan Cracknell, director of animal operations was in Africa on Friday finalising things, but if seeing the cheetahs is important to you I would delay. As soon as I have more info or confirmation that they are at Longleat I will post it here. Remember that they will be in quarantine first, ie not roaming.

.

Its the House which is substandard/unsuitable. Inside its just a couple of lockup cages. The island is plenty big enough to hold e.g. four animals. They used to have a trio on there(1.2) and there was plenty of space especially as much of the time they sit under the covered part of course. They will no doubt build a much larger area for the new enclosure, which the Gorillas then won't use very much.

(And of course, Nico is still on there anyway- for now).

I think that the gorilla house and island are listed, so no change possible.

That's interesting. So they couldn't improve/change the house or enlarge the island at all then. I think the House was built circa late 70's/early 80's period as the first three Gorillas (2 females, 1 male) came from Gordon Mills' private collection at Weybridge, around that time. I think the island had Chimpanzees before that, but not with that house?

Good to hear a baby anteater was born on monday but i am suprised it isn`t on the longleat news page.Apparently it`s a female called "Star".

Sometimes the architecture bureacrats are way off the line.
Perhaps we can put some of them in there?

No Hunters Until The End Of July... Friday 27 May 2011 The latest news of the 'Hunters Of The Sky' displays at Longleat is that they will not begin until the end of July.

Lion Cubs On Display, But Not Always... Friday 27 May 2011 The lion cubs are coming out into the paddock with their mum, but she does take them back inside as well, so you can't be guaranteed to see them.

6 cheetahs? Will they be separated in pairs for example, as from what I've heard keeping cheetahs in large groups isn't really a good way of managing them.

A few parks seem to want to start of with a high number of Cheetah. I think Whipsnade started cheetah rock off with 10 and Chester were initially going to start with 4.

But bear in mind, as I mentioned, they could all be easily separated. The drive-through nature of Longleat's enclosure with apparently just another quarantine pen makes me wonder how they're going to do it, so I'd be interested how the exhibit will be planned out to accommodate all the individuals.

I seem to recall that at the time these two exhibits opened there was a desperate need for new holders for the Sudanese subspecies, soemmeringii, which were brought in for both complexes. I don't know if that's still the case.

I'll be venturing down to Longleat this Thursday, and will come back with news and photos of all the changes: So if anyone has any particular requests they want me to find out, post 'em here.

Could you find out if possible about the Rhino's who are with who-I understand that 'Ebun' has been introduced to the male 'Unjarno' and 'Razina' and 'Marisha' are kept seperate,ISIS also list 1.4.0 White Rhino so any information would be great:)
